Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a loyal, intelligent and friendly breed that make excellent companion dogs. They are a medium-sized breed with a thick, water-resistant coat that can come in shades of black, yellow and chocolate. Labradors need plenty of daily physical and mental exercise to keep them happy and healthy, so it's important to know that they can be quite active and need the right amount of stimulation. They are generally good with children and other animals but can be mouthy when they are young, so it's important to start teaching them appropriate behavior and commands from puppyhood.
While Labrador Retrievers are not strictly considered to be hypoallergenic dogs, they are generally less likely to cause allergic reactions than other breeds because of their water-repellent coat. Allergens are most commonly caused by a combination of hair and dander, so compared to some other popular breeds, they are relatively less likely to set off allergy symptoms. The hair of a Lab is typically short and dense, so those with allergies may tolerate them better than long-haired breeds with more dander, such as some other retrievers, poodles, or terriers.
Labrador Retrievers should not be given anything that contains chocolate, caffeine, macadamia nuts, alcohol, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and chives. These can potentially be toxic to a Labrador Retriever and should be avoided at all costs. Stay away from anything with extra sugars and salts. Excess amounts of either of these can quickly cause health problems, such as obesity, heart disease, and dental disease. Avoid rawhide and any type of bone or brittle treats. Even boneless treats can become a choking hazard if not supervised properly.
A Labrador Retriever is an active, inquisitive breed. Preparing your home for your pup means creating a safe environment that they can explore and enjoy. Make sure that all hazardous chemicals and objects are placed up high, and confirm that all electrical cords and plants are out of their reach. If your pup is particularly destructive, either invest in some shatterproof items or opt for stuffed toys and chews instead. Lastly, create a secure outdoor area or invest in a puppy leash during walks to ensure that your pup doesn't wander too far.
The size of your Labrador Retriever puppy will depend on whether they are male or female, as males tend to be larger than females. Generally speaking, males can reach around 22.5-24.5 inches in height, while females tend to be slightly shorter, measuring around 21.5-23.5 inches in height. Your pup's weight will also vary based on their gender, but typically males will weigh 65-80 pounds and females will weigh 55-70 pounds. It's also important to remember that that different breeds can vary in size.
Absolutely! Labrador Retrievers are exceptionally fond of swimming, and are often described as “natural-born swimmers” due to their strong and muscular chest and webbed feet. They have a high tolerance for cold water, and usually love the sensation of floating in the water. Labradors naturally excel at swimming and can easily keep up with even the strongest swimmers. It’s no surprise that labs are so eager to take a dip as the breed is originally descended from Newfoundland, a province in Canada known for its fishing and maritime activities.
Labrador Retrievers are usually a great choice for first-time owners and can make an ideal furry companion. Labs are known for being loyal, attentive, and eager to please and usually have an outgoing, friendly temperament. They are also very intelligent and quickly learn basic commands like “sit”, “stay” and “come”, which makes obedience training easier.
Training a Labrador Retriever is rarely considered an easy task. Owners of Labradors need to dedicate significant amounts of time and effort to training properly. The breed is renowned for its intelligence and eagerness to please, but consistency, patience and positive reinforcement are all important factors to bear in mind. To foster successful training of a Labrador Retriever, it's essential to encourage desired behaviors, reward positive developments and discourage undesirable traits. Establishing good habits from puppyhood can help to ensure a successful and enjoyable lifestyle, as can investing in basic obedience training.
