Questions & Answers
A Labrador Retriever is a loving and loyal breed of dog originating from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is one of the most popular breeds in the United States and is known for its intelligence, activity level, sociability, and willingness to please its masters. With a short, dense coat that can come in black, yellow, or chocolate varieties, this breed is known to be a quintessential family pet. The water-resistant coat, webbed feet, and muscular build of Labrador Retrievers make them excellent swimmers and retrievers.
Labrador Retrievers are not non-shedding. Some Labs may shed a little, but the extent of shedding is unpredictable and varies significantly between individuals. The breed is characterized as “medium-shedding”, meaning they lose a moderate amount of coat throughout the year. If a Labrador is kept well groomed and dolled up properly, it can keep shedding to a minimum. Owners should brush their Lab regularly with the right tools to help keep shedding under control and address any minor health issues.
It is important to feed your Labrador Retriever with a high quality diet formulated for large-breed dogs and pay attention to their weight, activity level and age. You should aim to feed your pup around 20-30% of their diet as high quality protein like chicken, turkey, beef, fish or other meat sources. The remaining 70-80% should come from complex carbohydrates like peas, oats, sweet potatoes, brown rice and quinoa. In addition, you should also include some vegetables like carrots, broccoli, celery and/or spinach in their diet for added fiber and vitamins.
Preparing for a new Labrador Retriever can seem overwhelming at first, but it doesn't have to be. Before you bring your pup home, research the most common breed-specific health issues and create a plan to prevent or manage each one. Also select a veterinarian and select proper nutrition to meet the breed's specific needs. Next, be sure to puppy-proof your home, buy or create suitable housing for them, and stock up on accessories like leashes and collars.
Labrador Retrievers can grow to be quite large, so the size of your puppy will vary depending on whether it's a Standard or Miniature Lab. Generally speaking, Standard Labs reach a height of about 22.5-24.5 inches at the shoulder, while Miniature Labs stand around 17.5-19.5 inches at the shoulder. Full grown adult Standard Labs can weigh anywhere from 55-80 pounds, while adult Miniature Labs typically range between 30-50 pounds.
Labrador Retrievers have a natural love of water and swimming. They are known for their affinity for water and have earned a reputation as an excellent swimmer! Most Labrador Retrievers find swimming to be a fun and enjoyable way to exercise and have a good time with their owners. It can also be an excellent way to cool off during hot summer months. They are strong swimmers with a powerful and agile paddle stroke, so they can stay above the surface for a long time without tiring.
Labrador Retrievers are an incredibly friendly breed and are often considered one of the best family dogs given their loyalty and affectionate nature. Generally speaking, Labradors get along extremely well with children and make great companions. Not only do their friendly personalities and outgoing nature make them ideal playmates, but their protective nature also allows them to act as a safeguard for kids. Plus, they are known to be quite gentle when playing with children of all ages.
Training a Labrador Retriever can be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience but it does require determination and dedication. While Labradors are usually an eager and easy-going breed, they are highly intelligent and require consistent, structured training in order to progress. Early obedience and socialization classes are a must, as they can help ensure your pup matures into a well-mannered adult. It's important to understand that training is a repetitive process, so regular practice and lots of patience will be necessary to achieve the desired results.
