Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in the United States and around the world! Not only are they smart, friendly, and even-tempered, but they are also full of energy, making them perfect for an active lifestyle. Some other fun facts about Labradors include that they originally descended from the Newfoundland breed, they come in black, yellow, and chocolate colored fur, they are capable of swimming long distances, and their life span is up to 12 years! Furthermore, if given adequate exercise, they can be great family pets for years to come.
While Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be hypoallergenic breeds, some people with allergies find that their allergen symptoms are not as severe when living with one of these dogs. Labs are also known to have minimal shedding, which can further reduce exposure to allergens. Many owners of Labradors find that when they are regularly groomed, bathed, and brushed their dander and fur can be reduced to a minimum, which can be beneficial for people who suffer from allergies.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed human food such as chocolate, grapes, fatty foods, or table scraps. Labradors are prone to weight gain, so high-calorie snacks should be avoided. Rawhide, bones, and some chew toys are all dangerous for Labradors to ingest, even if they seem to enjoy them. Specific dog foods should be carefully chosen to fit the Labrador's age and activity level, such as a puppy formula or high protein diet for active Labs.
To prepare your home for a new Labrador Retriever, start by providing a safe and loving environment. Create a space where they can have time to adjust and settle in. Make sure there are chew toys available for them to keep their teeth healthy. Clean up any small objects or potential choking hazards that a curious pup may have access to. Keep a leash and collar on hand and make sure they always wear it outdoors. Set up an area for walking the pup and an area for playing, so make sure they get lots of exercise.
Labrador Retrievers are not typically classified as small dogs, as they are usually considered to be a medium to large-sized breed. That said, there can be a variation in size some Labs are smaller than average and some are larger than average. Generally speaking, an average adult male Lab stands between 21.5 and 24.5 inches at the shoulder, weighing between 65 and 80 pounds, while an average adult female Lab stands between 20.5 and 22.5 inches at the shoulder, weighing between 55 and 70 pounds.
Walking your Labrador Retriever for at least 30 minutes a day is generally recommended. It's important to consider your dog's age, health, and breed, as well as the climate and terrain. Puppies and senior dogs will need less walking time than adults, while working Labradors will need more. To create a healthy exercise routine for your Labrador Retriever, gradually increase the length of your walks, making sure to give your dog plenty of water and rest throughout the day.
Generally speaking, Labrador Retrievers are known to be very loyal, gentle, and patient family companions; and as such, they are excellent around children and make great pets for families of all ages.
