Labrador Retrievers are friendly, intelligent dogs that make great family pets. They are often associated with retrieving, but they're also excellent therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, and service dogs. Labradors need lots of exercise and will need ample opportunity each day for outdoor activities. They do well with most temperaments, but it's important to start training early and be consistent. Labradors are generally low-maintenance, but regular grooming is necessary to keep their lovely coat healthy and free from matting.
The Labrador Retriever has a unique double coat. The top layer is a shiny, straight outer coat that can range in color from black to golden. Beneath this is a soft, short, thick undercoat. This double coat helps to insulate the dog and keeps it waterproof. It helps the Labrador Retriever stay warm in colder temperatures, and helps to keep them cool in hot climates. The Labrador's coat needs to be brushed regularly to keep it in great shape and free from tangles or matting. Its coat is also generally very easy to take care of and groom.
Labrador Retrievers are a popular breed of dog that many people enjoy owning. It is important to note, however, that not all foods are right for this breed. In general, corn, onions, garlic, chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, and candy are all foods that should be avoided when it comes to feeding a Labrador Retriever. Additionally, large quantities of fatty table scraps or bones should be avoided; not only can fatty foods lead to obesity in Labradors, but bones can also break or splinter and become lodged in the dog's digestive tract or throat.

Purchase plenty of toys that are safe and durable, as Labradors can be big chewers. Consider placing some adult Labrador-proof chew items around too. Create a safe outdoor space with a secure fence and yard, with plenty of shade and plenty of cool, clean water available for drinking and playing.
Labrador Retrievers are typically categorized as medium-size dogs with a standard size range of 22 to 25 inches tall at the shoulders and 55 to 80 pounds. This breed has a broad chest and strong legs, with a dense double coat that sheds throughout the year. Despite their standard size range, Labrador Retrievers are considered the most variable size among all breeds, as some are smaller than the minimum while others are larger than the maximum. Some are even considered extra-large, weighing up to 95 pounds or taller than 25 inches.
Generally, walking your Labrador Retriever for at least 30 minutes per day is recommended. However, age, size, and activity level should be taken into account when determining how much exercise your pup needs. Older dogs and puppies, for example, should not be overworked and may get enough exercise with less than 30 minutes of walking each day. On the other hand, active dogs who are larger in size may benefit from a longer walk or more vigorous activity. Depending on your pup's needs, anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours may constitute a proper amount of activity for your Labrador Retriever.

Start with one command, practice it several times a day, and give your pup a treat and plenty of praise whenever he or she obeys. Once your pup is reliably good at that command, add another. Make sure that practice sessions don’t become repetitive and boring by changing up the scenery and order of commands.
