Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a hybrid or designer dog breed that is a mix of the Maltese and the Poodle breeds. This mix makes for a small and very intelligent breed of dog. The hybrid breed was developed to be a hypoallergenic pet, as Maltese and Poodle are both considered low-shedding breeds of dog. Their small size also makes them ideal for apartment living, as they require very little space for exercise. While the Maltipoo breed is relatively new, they have already become a well-known and popular choice for many families and individuals.
An important part of managing allergies with Maltipoos is to be aware of potential allergens that may be in their environment. For example, cleaning often and using hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners, refrain from buying pet furniture and bedding that has been treated with chemicals and opt for natural organic materials that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction such as organic wool or cotton blankets. Additionally, installing air filters with HEPA capacity and using an air purifier in the home can reduce dander, dust and pollen that may contribute to allergies.
Maltipoos are generally very healthy dogs and their diet should be carefully managed accordingly. Certain foodstuffs should be avoided as excesses of them can make Maltipoos unwell. As a guideline, it is best to avoid fatty meats, onion, chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins. Additionally, it is important to recognize that Maltipoos have sensitive stomachs and dairy products, including cheese, can cause digestive issues. Dietary treats should also be limited to avoid causing weight gain which is especially dangerous for smaller breeds like Maltipoos.
Maltipoos do have a few special requirements that should be taken into consideration when adding one to your family. As they are a hybrid of two popular and intelligent breeds, the Maltese and the Poodle, Maltipoos can require more grooming than other breeds, as they can have a thick, fluffy coat. Generally, regular brushing and bathing are required, and more often with Maltipoos that are primarily white.
Maltipoos can reach up to 15-17 inches standing at their highest point (from the shoulder). It is generally accepted that on average most Maltipoos reach a mature weight of 8-17 lbs. As a mix of Toy Poodle and Maltese, these pups tend to stay on a smaller size range as adults depending on their genetic background. It is important to remember that every Maltipoo is going to be different and may not fit within the average size range.
Absolutely! There is no reason why you can't take your Maltipoo on a run, as long as you know how to adjust to their needs. Most importantly, ensure that your Maltipoo's breed and size can handle the exercise of going on a run. Consider taking your pup on short runs and working yourself up to longer distances over time. Remember to bring plenty of water and treats, and never force your Maltipoo to go beyond their ability. Additionally, remember to follow any safety tips or leash laws that may apply in your area.
Maltipoos are renowned for making good family dogs. They tend to be intelligent, friendly, and sociable, which makes them ideal companions for kids. Maltipoos are also low-shedders, providing families with an easy-to-care-for, hypoallergenic pet. They form strong bonds with their owners and are not known to be overly yappy or destructive. Maltipoos have a playful, affectionate demeanor, and while some breeds can be more reserved, Maltipoos can generally be trained to be comfortable around people.
Training Maltipoos should be tailored to a specific individual's needs, but it's recommended that you spend at least 30 minutes a day engaging in activities such as positive reinforcement, obedience training, or playtime. It's important to remember that Maltipoos need both mental stimulation and physical activity, so plan for a variety of activities. It's also essential to stick to a regular schedule to ensure your Maltipoo learns consistently. Keep your Maltipoo engaged and motivated with rewards and plenty of love.
