Questions & Answers
Maltipoos are a cross between a maltese and a poodle, and are becoming increasingly popular due to their intelligence, loyalty, and loving personalities. They have minimal shedding so are a great choice for people with allergies and don't require extensive grooming maintenance. While they don't need a lot of physical exercise, they do need plenty of mental stimulation, so it's important to make sure their minds are being exercised with activities such as tug, fetch, hide and seek, agility games, and obedience classes.
Maltipoos have a soft, wavy-to-curly coat-type. It typically grows to be two to four inches in length and tends to shed very little. Though bred for their unique appearance and compact size, Maltipoos still have the same basis for their coat type as their parent breed, the Poodle. With their unique inherited coat type, Maltipoos require brushing and combing two to three times a week to keep their coat healthy, groomed and tangle-free. This breed tends to form mats, which can be uncomfortable for the pup.
Feeding a Maltipoo should depend on his age, lifestyle, activity level and other factors. In general, puppies under 12 months should be fed three times a day, while adults over 12 months should be fed twice daily. High-quality dry kibble is ideal as the main source of nutrition, but you may also wish to add some wet food, cooked and chopped meats, fruits and vegetables as occasional treats. If you're unsure about which specific dog food to choose, consult your veterinarian for advice. For a healthy diet, remember to provide plenty of fresh, clean water at all times.
Before you welcome a Maltipoo into your home, consider purchasing essential items that will help provide a safe and comfortable environment. Firstly, purchase safe, durable, and chew-proof toys specifically for small dogs. Secondly, a comfy bed and cozy blankets are necessary. Make sure the bed is designed for smaller breeds. Thirdly, a good quality collar with an appropriate clipped leash is needed for walks and training. Fourth, you should invest in nail clippers or a nail grinder to keep your Maltipoo’s claws properly trimmed and blunt.
Maltipoos are typically considered small dogs. The size of a Maltipoo is dependent on their parents, a Toy Poodle and a Maltese, and their upbringing. Generally, Maltipoos are 9 to 14 inches tall and 6 to 18 pounds. However, their size and weight can be on the larger end of the spectrum and they can be anywhere from 12 to 14 inches and 10 to 20 pounds once fully grown.
Every Maltipoo is different, and the amount of exercise they need is partly based on age and health. In general, most Maltipoos should get 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. This can be in the form of walks, playtime, or a combination of the two. When it comes to walking, it's best to start gradually and increase distance and duration over time. You should also consider your Maltipoo's age, health, and weather conditions.
Maltipoos are generally well-suited for families with children. Their gentle, mild-mannered temperament makes them welcoming to playtime and affection. They are small in size, so they may be easily handled by kids. With proper socialization, Maltipoos can learn to be calm and gentle with children, making them a great companion for kids of all ages. Maltipoos are highly intelligent, too, which means they are easily trained and quick to learn the household rules. They have a lot of energy, but they are unlikely to knock over a toddler.
Training a Maltipoo can vary depending on the individual pup and owner. It is important to remember that while puppies of any breed may tend to act like a challenge, Maltipoos are a breed of dog who respond well to training with patience and consistency. Some owners may find working with their Maltipoo to be a relatively easy and pleasant experience, especially with the right foundation and approach to training. Giving plenty of attention and rewards for positive behavior is essential in encouraging the desired behavior.
