Questions & Answers
A Maltipoo is a designer breed that is a hybrid cross between a toy/miniature Poodle and a Maltese. This combination creates an adorable, low-shedding, hypoallergenic lap dog. Maltipoos are loyal, friendly, and easy to train. They have lots of energy, yet they get along well with other pets and even small children. They enjoy spending time with their owners and can be very affectionate. With consistent training and early socialization, a Maltipoo can make a great canine companion.
Managing allergies with Maltipoos may require some effort, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your exposure to allergens. First, be sure to thoroughly brush your Maltipoo at least twice a week in order to help remove allergens and dander. You can also brush your pet outdoors to ensure allergens do not spread into your home. Additionally, it’s important to vacuum regularly and clean bedding frequently to reduce the accumulation of allergens that have been brought indoors. Whenever possible, have someone without allergies handle sweeping, mopping and cleaning.
Maltipoos make wonderful pets, so it's important to feed them a healthy diet. A high quality dry kibble should make up the bulk of your pup's meal plan. Look for one made with lots of natural ingredients, like real vegetables and meat proteins. Avoid overfeeding your dog; measure the correct portion sizes so you don't accidentally give your pup too many calories. You can supplement their diet with a rotation of human-grade, fresh, and canned wet food, along with healthy, chewy treats. Always introduce new foods slowly to test for allergies.
Preparing for a new Maltipoo is an exciting and important task. To ensure you're making the right decisions and doing your best to provide the best care for your pet, start by learning as much as you can about the breed. Educate yourself on the physical care the Maltipoo requires such as their grooming needs as well as their dietary needs and exercise requirements. When possible, build an area for your puppy that is away from the family's main living and traffic areas. This will help enforce training commands and encourage some downtime for your pup.
Every Maltipoo is unique, and size can widely vary based on the type and traits of the parent breeds. Generally speaking, a Maltipoo puppy can range in size from 5 to 20 pounds when fully grown, depending on it's genealogy. Typically, this breed is toy sized when mature, but the size of an individual puppy is generally determined by the size of its parents.
Maltipoos are a cross-breed between Maltese and Poodle, making them a combination of both breeds. They benefit from regular exercise and activity, as any type of dog does. Owners should aim to give their Maltipoo at least 30 minutes to an hour of activity each day, preferably outdoors. This can include a daily walk, as the fresh air, and the stimulating sights, smells and textures will all provide your pooch with plenty to investigate. You could also try adding in some carry games with retrieving and tugging, as these are great cardiovascular exercises.
Maltipoos can be excellent pets for families who are looking for a companion canine. These intelligent and loyal dogs make good family companions due to their desire to be around people. They are typically affectionate and loving towards members of their human family and enjoy being around children. Maltipoos also shed very little, making them a great option for those with allergies. They usually have gentle personalities, allowing them to get along with other pets and even be around strangers.
Training a Maltipoo can vary depending on their age, energy level and size, however the American Kennel Club recommends that Puppies should be trained and socialized for, at minimum, 10 minutes per day. Puppies are easily distracted so keeping their training sessions short and fun will help them retain the information and stay engaged. As they get older, you can extend your training sessions to 30 minutes per day. If you're looking to compete or just have a well-rounded pup, you should aim for 60-90 minutes a day of obedience training and socialization.
