Questions & Answers
Pomskies are considered a hybrid breed of dogs that are a result of crossing a Pomeranian with a Siberian Husky. Depending on the size of the parent breeds, Pomskies typically range in size from 5 to 20 lbs, making them smaller than a conventional Husky but larger than a traditional Pom. As the dog is considered a cross breed, it's not recognized by the American Kennel Club, though more and more breeders are specializing in creating these hybrid dogs. Personality wise, they tend to be playful, highly intelligent, and relatively friendly with other animals and people.
While there's no guarantee that a Pomsky will not cause an allergic reaction, people who are allergic to other dogs may still be able to keep a Pomsky in their home. Pomskies are typically considered hypoallergenic, which means they shed less than other breeds and produce lower levels of allergens. That said, the only way to know for sure is to test your personal allergy levels and determine how you respond when around general dogs.
Pomskies, or Pomeranian-Husky mixes, are lively, energetic, and curious dogs that require a healthy diet full of nutrition. Ideally, some high-quality kibble should make up their main meals. Look for foods that are made of only natural, wholesome ingredients without any chemicals or added fillers and that list a real animal protein source (such as chicken, beef, or fish) as one of the main ingredients.
To make sure that your new Pomsky is as comfortable and happy as possible in their new home, it's wise to do some preparation ahead of time. Start by puppy-proofing your home—make sure electrical cords, wires, and small objects are out of reach, and block any areas of the house or yard that are not safe for them. Make sure you have fresh water and food bowls, puppy-safe toys, and some bedding in an area of your home. This should be a quiet, dry area away from any drafts and foot traffic.
A Pomsky puppy's adult size is typically determined by the size of its parents, so it can range anywhere from 8 pounds up to approximately 30 pounds. However, there is no guaranteed answer as to how big your specific Pomsky puppy will grow. On average, a fully grown Pomsky will weigh between 15 and 25 pounds, though some may be slightly smaller or larger than this.
The amount of time you should walk your Pomsky each day depends primarily on their age, health, and activity level. Young, healthy Pomskies should be walked at least 20 minutes to 30 minutes twice per day but should not exceed one hour at a time to minimize the risk of injury. For older or less active Pomskies, a leisurely 10 minutes to 15 minutes in the morning and evening is generally enough.
Generally speaking, Pomskies can get along well with other pets in the household. Of course, like other pets, properly introducing Pomskies to existing pets and family members and providing positive reinforcement can help them adapt to their new environment. Socializing them while they are young will also help immensely as they grow. Regular training and teaching them to recognize other animals as members of the same family will likely lead to good relationships between them, making coexistence much easier. With proper care, Pomskies can learn to treat all pets with kindness, respect, and love.
Training a Pomsky can be both easy and difficult. Each pup has their own unique personality and challenges, so it's important to understand your pup's needs and learn how best to motivate them. Professional trainers and knowledgeable owners can provide helpful tips and advice on how to best train a Pomsky. For those just starting out, making sure to keep training sessions short and fun can be a great way to keep both you and your pup engaged and focused. Starting out with simple commands and being consistent can set up a good foundation for more complex training down the road.
