Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid dog breed that crosses a Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. They are relatively new compared to other breeds and have become increasingly popular in recent years. They are generally very intelligent dogs, with some estimates placing them as being about as intelligent as the average Border Collie. Pomskies are loyal and affectionate, and they like to be active with their owners, including taking them on regular walks. They do not do well with long periods of isolation, and need to be around people regularly.
Pomskies can be considered a low-shedding breed of dog that typically does not require intense grooming or shedding of fur on a regular basis. That said, they are not considered completely non-shedding. While it’s quite uncommon for a Pomsky to shed excessively, it is still possible for them to do so. To reduce shedding, it is important to brush your Pomsky's fur at least once a week to remove any dead fur, and double-check for any matted fur.
Pomskies should not be fed any type of human food, as their delicate stomachs can't process it properly and it can cause them to become ill. Additionally, they should not eat anything that may contain high levels of salt, sugar or spices, as these may cause digestion or gastrointestinal problems. Pomskies should also be kept away from any type of chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions or garlic, as ingestion of any of these can lead to toxic poisoning and even death.
Yes, Pomskies do have special requirements. They are high-energy dogs that need lots of exercise and attention in the form of daily walks and playtime. In addition, Pomskies need a lot of mental stimulation or they can become bored and destructive. They do best with a consistent, patient, and gentle leader who establishes guidelines and is committed to consistent training and socialization. Without these, they can become aggressive or timid. Furthermore, they do best when given tasks and/or puzzles to solve.
Pomskies are a smaller designer crossbreed, so they tend to be quite small. Generally, they average around 20 to 30 pounds and reach heights of around 12 to 16 inches. But they can range anywhere from 9 to 30 pounds and 6 to 18 inches, so it really depends on which size Pomeranian or Siberian Husky parent they take after. Ultimately, Pomskies tend to be small to medium-sized and usually do not exceed 30 pounds.
Yes, you can take your Pomsky running! However, you need to ensure that you are taking all necessary steps to keep your pup safe and comfortable, as they do not tolerate extreme heat and humidity. You'll need to make sure that your Pomsky's feet are going to be protected from the heat if it is too hot outside. You should also make sure you pick a route with a lot of shade and stop for frequent water breaks. For short runs you might consider a nice harness and soft-soled leash, but consider using a jogging stroller if it's a longer distance.
Pomskies can often be excellent family-friendly companions and make great playmates for children of all ages. They usually have friendly temperaments and tend to thrive in households with kids. They are generally highly intelligent and can be trained to be obedient, making them much less likely to act out destructively or aggressively. It's important to start socializing them early on and be sure to keep them regularly exercised and engaged to prevent any boredom-related behavior issues. With proper care and attention, Pomskies can make great additions to any family unit, including those with children.
Training your Pomsky is a rewarding experience, and by taking the right approach, you can ensure your pup is a great addition to your home. Start by setting boundaries and providing structure to your pup's routine. Choose a consistent vocabulary, like commands for “sit”, “come”, “stay”, “no”, etc. and use the same word for the same command each time. Establish who is the leader, by assigning roles in different situations and rewarding positive behavior.
