Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a very interesting hybrid breed of dog, made from a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian. They carry the characteristics of both breeds, making them a unique and fun companion. They have a coat that is similar to and as thick as a Siberian Husky’s, but shorter like a Pomeranian’s, and their size can range from 7 to 22 pounds. They make great watchdogs because they are naturally alert and can bark when guests arrive. Pomskies are friendly and loyal, so they crave human companionship.
Pomskies, as a crossbreed between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, do not have a consistent set of genetics. It is not known if the breed is in fact hypoallergenic. However, compared to some breeds, the Pomsky is thought to be less potent in dander production and saliva. Some owners of Pomskies report that they are relatively allergen-friendly, but each individual may vary.
Pomskies have unique dietary needs, so it is important to feed them a balanced diet of high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals from healthy, natural ingredients. It is best to avoid foods that contain artificial ingredients, chemicals, or preservatives. Foods such as onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and chocolate can be toxic to dogs, so these should be avoided as well. Some human foods, such as sugary or fatty treats, can cause gastro-intestinal upset in dogs and should also be avoided.
Preparing for a new puppy, such as a Pomsky, is an exciting yet daunting task. It's important to ensure you have the necessary supplies, such as a crate, bed, food, treats, toys, and collar, in place ahead of time. You can also evaluate the different options available and find what is the best fit for you and your new pup. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with basic training tips can be beneficial for your pet's growth. It can be beneficial to take your pup to the veterinarian for a check-up soon after you bring him home.
Pomskies can come in a variety of sizes; many breeders aim to replicate the size of a Siberian Husky, which is generally known to be a medium-sized dog breed weighing in around 35-50 pounds for females and 45-60 pounds for males. However, individual Pomskies can come in any size ranging from smaller to larger, even dwarf sizes, depending on the parent breeds and the specific genetics of each Pomsky. Additionally, the way the Pomskies are fed and exercised can also dictate their final size.
It is important to provide your Pomsky with plenty of exercise each day. A good rule of thumb is to try and ensure your Pomsky receives a minimum of 30 minutes of walking per day, or if possible a full hour. This will not only help keep your Pomsky's weight in check, but it will also give them the opportunity to explore and act out their natural tendencies as a breed. Furthermore, regular walks can provide essential stimulation to keep your Pomsky in the best possible physical condition.
Pomskies typically have a friendly, playful temperment which makes them a great match for children. They bond quickly and easily with kids, and are eager to please. They adore being around children, and make great playmates. They often have an innate penchant for understanding the needs of children, and their protective nature can make them a great option for homes with younger kids. They tend to be fiercely loyal and loving to their families, including children. Pomskies generally require frequent socialization as puppies in order to avoid potential issues such as timidness or aggression.
Pomskies can certainly be described as smart dogs; they are a highly intelligent breed and easily trainable. They are known as quick learners and can even learn and respond to commands, making them incredibly easy to train and work with. They are also quite inquisitive and enjoy learning new tricks, so they can be great companions for owners who are looking for a pet that is both intelligent and easy to handle. Even better, their good-natured personality and playful demeanour make them an exceptionally entertaining pet.
