Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a designer dog breed and are considered to be a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. In the United States, they are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club as a hybrid breed, and in the United Kingdom, they are recognized by the international designer canine registry. Pomskies have a thick double coat like the husky, and can come in different colors like black, white, tan and cream. They range in size from 14-22 pounds and 10-15 inches tall.
Pomskies are not hypoallergenic, but in general they are considered to be relatively low shedding dogs. Due to their hybrid nature, as they are a mix of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, their fur has been known to be less prone to triggering allergies than other dog breeds. However, that doesn't mean they won't cause you or your family any problems. As with any breed, the potential for an allergic reaction lies in the dander produced by the individual animal and the potential for triggering allergies can vary from pet to pet.
Pomskies should not be fed foods that contain a large amount of sugar, fat, salt, or additives. High amounts of these ingredients can be detrimental to their health, leading to obesity, kidney damage, and other nutritional-related health issues. A balanced diet of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins should be offered to Pomskies since they are an active breed. Fresh meats, eggs, and dairy are a good choice; however, care must be taken to avoid bones and organs, as they can be choking hazards.
To become the best puppy parent for your Pomsky, there are several steps you can take. Start by doing a bit of research; familiarize yourself with the breed so you can understand the breed-specific behaviors and traits. Then create a schedule for feeding, exercise, and potty times and stick to it. Make sure you set aside enough time each day to provide mental and physical stimulation to promote healthy growth. Research appropriate play styles, toy selection, and activities that Pomskies enjoy. It's also important to stay up to date on vaccinations, regular vet visits, and deworming.
Pomskies can vary greatly in size, depending on the parents' breeds. Generally, they are considered medium-sized dogs, but their adult size is difficult to predict, as their size range is anywhere between toy and medium. In terms of whether or not they could be considered "big dogs", the answer really depends on the individual, as larger specimens exist. Generally, a full-sized adult Pomsky will be more than 20 inches tall at the shoulder, but small breeds have been known to reach 24 inches or more.
Absolutely! Pomskies can definitely benefit from regular running just make sure that you start out slow and steady, and only take your pup running once they're at least six months old. When you first start running with your pup, begin with shorter runs of about 15 minutes and gradually work up to a half-hour or more. As your pup's endurance increases, the running distance can increase as well. Remember to constantly monitor your pup's fatigue, and cut back the running time if necessary. Also, build in plenty of resting and play time before and after running sessions.
Pomskies have a generally friendly nature and can get along with other pets if socialized well from a young age. They form strong relationships with their owners and love to please them, which can also help influence their ability to interact positively with other pets. That being said, this breed can be strong-willed and stubborn so introducing them to other animals in a positive way and ensuring proper supervision of their interactions is important. It's also important to recognize that Pomskies have a lot of energy and can often be too much for other pets, especially smaller ones.
Training a Pomsky is not necessarily an easy task, but it can be done with the right approach. Proper socialization, obedience training, and basic commands are all things that should be taken into consideration when training a Pomsky. It helps to understand their specific breed characteristics and build a positive relationship with them through consistency and positive reinforcement. Establishing an environment that encourages good behaviour will go a long way in successfully training a Pomsky. Spending quality time with them and seeking help from a qualified trainer or animal behaviourist are great ways to set yourself and your Pomsky up for success.
