Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a unique hybrid breed between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. These delightful pups are exceptionally sociable creatures that make wonderful family pets because of their outgoing temperaments. Pomskies have an endearing appearance, with their thick coats, friendly eyes, and adorable faces. What's even more interesting is their tendency to blend their parents' personalities, resulting in spirited and affectionate little dogs that crave attention. This breed, like Huskys, is also quite independent by nature, meaning they enjoy having the freedom to explore and play outdoors.
Pomskies are sometimes referred to as being hypoallergenic, however this isn't necessarily true. A broad generalization cannot be used to accurately describe this breed as some dogs may be more susceptible to allergies than others. While they may produce less dander, which can cause allergic reactions, they are still likely to cause some degree of reaction in those with allergies. Therefore, ultimately it depends on the individual dog and no definite answer can be given as to whether Pomskies are hypoallergenic.
Pomskies have specific dietary requirements and so it is important to choose dog food carefully. The best dog food for Pomskies should be high-quality kibble made from natural ingredients. It should include nutrient-dense proteins and fats along with complex carbohydrates for energy. The kibble should also be free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Additionally, these hybrids benefit from added Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as minerals such as calcium for strengthened bones and teeth.
Preparing your home for a new Pomsky puppy is an important task! You'll want to proof or puppy proof the area your puppy will inhabit by removing any hazardous items such as strings, wires, cords, potentially toxic plants, and poisonous household products that could pose a hazard to your puppy. Providing a safe and clean space for your puppy to relieve themselves is also a must. It is recommended that you purchase age-appropriate toys and a bed or crate for them as well.
Pomskies may be considered small dogs depending on the size of the parents used in the breeding process. Mixed breeds can vary in size from small to large and pomskies can be anything in between. A typical adult Pomsky will range in size from 8-15 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 15-30 pounds, which is usually considered to be in the small or toy category. However, some Pomskies can reach up to 35 pounds at full growth, which would put them in the medium to large range for dog breeds.
Pomskies are known to enjoy swimming and many owners report that their pups actively seek out water-based activities. Given that this is a designer breed with a selectively bred heritage stemming from Arctic sled dogs like the Siberian Husky, swimming would be an activity suited for their broad range of capabilities. With proper supervision and suitable instruction, a Pomsky can learn to love the water with simple, positive reinforcement. As puppies, it is best to introduce them to calm, shallow bodies of water until they become comfortable with the sensations of the aquatic environment.
Generally speaking, yes, Pomskies do get along with other pets. That said, it's important bear in mind that these hybrid dogs, like any other breed, can have unique and individual personalities. It's best to introduce them gradually and properly to other household pets and observe the interactions to ensure they get along and that everybody is comfortable and not overly stressed. Introducing new pets into a household should always be done carefully to ensure that the animals remain safe and well-adjusted.
Training a Pomsky is not difficult but it is important to be consistent and persistent when doing so. To start, it is beneficial to use positive reinforcement for the behaviors you would like your Pomsky to exhibit. Provide your pet with treats, petting, and encouragement every time you observe a desired behavior. You can also use verbal cues and clickers to remind the Pomsky of the expected behavior. Be mindful not to give treats for excessive barking; rather, wait for a quiet behavior before providing reinforcement.
