Questions & Answers
A Pomsky is a relatively new designer dog breed that is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They are often referred to as the 'Eskimo Dog', 'Pomski' or 'Huskeranian'. Since they are a hybrid breed, the physical characteristics of a Pomsky can vary widely, depending on the purebred parentage. Generally, these dogs have a thick, fluffy coat, which can range from tan, grey, black, white or a mix.
Pomskies are not hypoallergenic breeds, but they do possess less dander-producing qualities than some other breeds, making them a better fit for families sensitive to allergens. Pomskies have a very thick double coat, which should be brushed thoroughly and regularly to minimize how much allergen particles are released. To maximize comfort for allergy sufferers, it is also important to regularly wipe down surfaces Pomskies reside on with a damp cloth. With these measures taken, those with moderate allergies may be able to handle the presence of a Pomsky with relative ease.
Pomskies typically have the same dietary requirements of both Pomeranian and Siberian Husky breeds, with some variation depending on the individual animal. A typical diet for a Pomsky may include high-quality kibble that is high in protein and fat, wet food, plain cooked chicken, beef, and lamb, brown rice, organic yogurt, cottage cheese, vegetables, and fruits. Treats can also be considered as long as they do not exceed 10-15% of the overall nutriment intake.
Before adding a Pomsky to your family, it is important to make sure that your home is adequately prepared. Since Pomskies are small dogs, it is important to puppy-proof all areas they will be allowed to explore. This includes blocking off access to unsafe items, such as cleaning products, wires, and small objects they can swallow. Additionally, it is a good idea to designate a specific area, like a crate or dog bed, for your Pomsky to have as their own space. You should fill this area with toys, blankets, and cozy things to make your pup feel safe.
Pomskies can range anywhere from 8-15 pounds, depending on their genetics from their parent breeds. Usually, they are around 10-14 pounds as adults. Generally, males can be larger than females, with some larger individuals getting up to 18 pounds. That being said, size is largely dependent on individual genetics and cannot be predicted reliably. Only by meeting the pup in person can you begin to guess their potential size as an adult.
The amount of walking your Pomsky should do each day is largely dependent on their age, size, and health. Puppies up to 4 months old should only be taken out for a few short walks; 5-6 month olds should go for longer walks of around 20 minutes; and 6-12 month olds may need up to 35 minutes of exercise. Once your Pomsky is older than 1 year, regular walks of 45-90 minutes every day--or two shorter walks daily--are recommended to keep your pup active and healthy.
Generally speaking, Pomskies are known for getting along well with other pets, especially if they have been socialized properly. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them quite easy to train. With consistency and patience, you should be able to introduce your Pomsky to other animals and create a peaceful and harmonious home. In the earlier stages of socialization, it's important to introduce the cat or dog gradually, supervising play sessions and letting the animals get used to one another.
Pomskies are classified as a designer dog breed and as a result there isn't definitive evidence of their intelligence levels. However, these dogs are unique in that they combine the intelligence and adaptability of a Pomeranian with the trainability of a Siberian Husky. As a result, Pomskies are likely to be capable learners who excel in their ability to understand and obey commands. With the right guidance and consistency, they could become a remarkably intelligent pet. Additionally, since Pomskies are known to be friendly and loyal towards their owners, they will likely be eager to learn and please.
