Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, making them a hybrid, or designer, breed. As a result of the combination of two purebred breeds, the attributes which a Pomsky may possess can vary from pup-to-pup. However, they usually have an overall medium size, standing at 8 to 15 inches tall and typically weighing anywhere from 10 to 30lbs. Pomskies are generally charming, alert, and lively, and they can have either a double coat or long coat making them an ultimate furry companion.
Pomskies have a unique coat that can sometimes be considered non-shedding however, it is important to note that all dogs do shed to some degree. Pomskies naturally have a fuzzy outer coat made of thick, soft fur which often requires very minimal brushing. While Pomskies do not have a thick undercoat like some breeds, they may still have an occasional shedding episode which is why it is important to stay on top of their regular brushing routine. Even though it may not be minimal, grooming and regular brushing is essential in order to keep the shedding to a minimum.
A Pomsky (a cross between a Pomeranian and a Husky) should be fed a quality diet specifically formulated for their breed. It's important that their food contains the correct balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals to meet their individual nutritional needs. You can check with your veterinarian to ensure your pet is getting the right food for their age, size and level of activity. Additionally, consider splitting meals into two or three smaller ones during the day, if possible, to help provide smaller amounts of energy throughout the day and keep your Pomsky feeling more full.
Before you bring home your new Pomsky, there are a few steps that you should take to prepare. First, you should create a comfortable space for your pup to rest and live in, populated with plenty of toys and comfortable bedding. Spend time familiarizing yourself with Pomskies, as their behavior and specific needs may differ from other dog breeds. Once your pup arrives, establish a consistent feeding regimen and take time to house train them right away. Make sure to introduce them to a veterinarian for a checkup, and get them vaccinations if necessary.
Pomskies typically range in size from 10 to 19 inches, depending on the size of the parent breeds. On average, fully-grown Pomskies can weigh anything between 13 to 30 pounds. However, since both parents are Toy breeds, some Pomskies may be significantly smaller or larger than this range. With proper care and nutrition, these puppies often develop a healthy, muscular physique and weigh within the given size range. Since the size of the puppy can vary so much depending on the parents, it is important to ask the breeder for the parents' sizes when selecting a Pomsky.
How much time you should spend walking your Pomsky depends on both the age and physical condition of your particular dog. Generally speaking, an adult Pomsky requires 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise each day, split into shorter sessions of 5 to 30 minutes. During these sessions, walking is an essential part of exercise. As with any exercise regime, it is important to build up slowly. For a young or physically unfit dog, 5 minute walks twice per day will be fine.
Pomskies have a very friendly and loyal personality which makes them great companions for kids. Generally, these dogs get along great with children and make perfect playmates, since they love to be around people, have lots of patience, and enjoy playing fetch or hide and seek. They are also affectionate, smart, and always willing to please, which makes them a great fit for a home with active children. If properly trained and socialized, Pomskies can thrive in a home with kids and can happily become a part of the family.
Training a Pomsky should be done at least for 10-15 minutes a day. Most dogs respond best when the daily session is broken into multiple, 10-15 minute blocks. Of course, the amount of time you choose to train your pup is up to you some owners opt for longer sessions several times a week, with shorter, more frequent sessions sprinkled in for reinforcement, while others prefer shorter sessions on a daily basis.
