Questions & Answers
Pomskies are a hybrid breed of dog that is made up of a mix of two different purebreds: the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky. This particular crossbreed has become increasingly popular over the years, due to its compact size, intelligence, and loyalty. Generally, Pomskies tend to resemble small Huskies with a semi-fluffy double coat and a medium-to-long length, while exhibiting both the personality traits and physical characteristics of both parents. They are usually very active, playful, and eager to please, and can learn commands and tricks quickly.
Pomskies can be great family pets to include in the home of someone with allergies. To help manage allergies, work with your veterinarian to determine the best way to reduce dander and other allergens. Additionally, maintaining an immaculate home environment can reduce the risks of an allergic reaction. Regularly vacuum and steam all carpets and furniture to keep the air free of pollen particles. Keeping your Pomsky well-groomed can also minimize the amount of fur and dander in your home. Groom your pup on a consistent basis and bathe them at least once a week.
Pomskies, like all other dog breeds, should not have certain foods that may cause health complications for them. Even though they may seem to beg for food meant for humans, they should not be given human food as often as possible. Some potential human foods that Pomskies should not be fed are chocolate, macadamia nuts, raisins, grapes, and xylitol (found in sugar-free products). Garlic and onions can also cause gastro problems in dogs, and dairy products have lactose which can cause tummy trouble.
Pomskies have some special requirements to consider when considering them as a pet. They require daily mental and physical exercise, a nutrient-rich diet, and regular grooming and brushing. As their coats tend to mat easily, it's important to brush them a few times per week. It's also important to note that Pomskies are a highly social breed, therefore they thrive in an environment that includes other people and animals. They also require frequent socialization and playtime to help prevent boredom and destructive behavior.
Size can vary significantly in a Pomsky puppy, as the breed is still too young to have an “official” standard. Generally, they will be between 11 and 17 inches tall and 15 and 35 pounds when fully-grown. Your particular puppy’s size will ultimately depend on the size of the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky the pup came from. If you want a better idea of what size yours will get to, it’s a good idea to ask the breeder for information on the parents and look up a few size averages.
Pomskies are typically high energy and require a significant amount of exercise. Without enough physical activity, they have the potential to become quite destructive. Since they are a hybrid of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, a Pomsky requires moderate to intense exercise, about an hour a day at a minimum. If more activity is given, the better; however, as with all dogs, adjust the activity level to a level they can comfortably handle. Keeping an active pet will ensure overall health of your Pomsky and will help to reduce any behavior issues.
Generally speaking, Pomskies are very good with children. They have a lot of energy and love to play, making them a great fit for households with young kids. They tend to be very friendly and have a gentle, affectionate nature that kids can appreciate. Even though they may be small, they are still very intelligent and can learn to respect boundaries that you set. With proper socialization and training, your Pomsky can be a great companion to any family with young children.
Training a Pomsky can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but like any other dog breed, it comes with challenges and takes time and patience. Training a Pomsky also requires consistency, dedication, and a lot of positive reinforcement. It's important to start training as early as possible. Puppies learn faster and have fewer behavioral issues as adults when they are exposed to consistent training from a young age. With the proper guidance, consistency, and reinforcement, you can successfully train your Pomsky to obey basic commands and create good habits.
