Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an increasingly popular designer hybrid breed created by deliberate crossing of two distinct breeds a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. They are often referred to as a "designer dog" because of the intentional cross-breeding, and are typically friendly, playful and affectionate animals with a moderate energy level. They can be loyal companions and highly trainable due to the fact that they have taken the best part of both breeds. However, they are not hypoallergenic and they require plenty of exercise and playtime.
Pomskies are typically hypoallergenic, low-shedding dogs with little to no dander, making them much less likely to cause allergies than other breeds. However, as with any pet, an individual can never be 100% sure until allergies are triggered in their own environment. It is recommended that prospective owners consult with a veterinarian to assess their ability to care for a Pomsky before deciding to bring one home.
Pomskies are a mix between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian and have specific dietary needs depending on their age. Generally, Pomskies should be fed between 1/2 to 2 1/2 cups of high quality, specially formulated dry kibble that contains all the essential nutrients their growing bodies need, divided up into two meals a day. It may also be beneficial to supplement their diet with raw, meaty bones for additional calcium and protein. To maintain a healthy weight, Pomskies should also be fed healthy treats, like fruits and vegetables.
To become the best puppy parent for your Pomsky, the first step is understanding everything about the breed and their needs in order to provide the very best care. Learn about their nutrition and grooming requirements, their temperaments, exercise needs, and general health. This knowledge will help you understand how to create an environment that meets all of their physical and emotional needs. Next, have a plan in place for potty training, obedience, and behavioral training. Start as soon as your puppy comes home, using positive reinforcement and consistency in your approach.
Pomskies can range in size, from toy size to larger than a normal-sized Pomeranian. The size of Pomskies can vary depending upon the type of pomeranians used for breeding. Generally, Pomskies tend to be more medium-sized dogs when compared to other breeds and not usually considered to be 'big dogs.' The height of a Pomsky is usually between 10-15 inches and can weigh between 20 and 30 pounds when fully grown. Ultimately, Pomskies are a hybrid breed, so the size can vary depending on the genetics of the parents.
Pomskies are a high energy breed, and so they need a significant amount of exercise to stay healthy and fit. Depending on their age, size, and energy level, they can require anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours of exercise a day. For puppies and young dogs, a combination of short walks or runs, playtime sessions, and mental stimulation should be enough. Once they are older, however, an adult should aim for longer, more intensive runs and hikes with their pup. Doing activities like agility courses or fly ball are also helpful to keep them in shape.
Pomskies tend to get along very well with children, especially with active and outgoing kids. They have a lot of energy and are very playful, making them excellent companions for children. They're also known for their loyalty and trustworthiness, which makes them highly dependable when your child wants to spend time with them. Pomskies require a lot of attention and exercise, so it's important that your child can give them the care and attention they need. With the right amount of socialization and training, they can make wonderful additions to families with kids of all ages.
Training a Pomsky is not necessarily an easy task, but rather one that requires work and dedication. Every dog is different in how willing and able they are to learn, and the same applies to Pomskies. Depending on the individual Pomsky, some may require more patience and consistency when it comes to training. It is important to regularly practice commands throughout the puppy's life to ensure they are effectively trained. Before starting any training, it is important to gain the pup's trust by showing them love and affection.
