Questions & Answers
Poodles are considered one of the oldest, most recognizable dog breeds in the world. Not only is the breed represented in paintings from as early as the 15th century, they also have a whole range of talents. Poodles come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. They have strong swimming abilities due to their water-resistant coats, and have a lot of energy too. They are famed for their intelligence, often learning tricks and commands quickly, and can even take part in agility competitions.
Poodles are classified as hypoallergenic because they do not shed their fur like many other breeds of dogs, making them a better choice for those with pet allergies. That being said, even though poodles are considered hypoallergenic, it does not mean that they are 100% allergen free. In fact, people with allergies may still be sensitive to the saliva or dander of poodles, or even other elements such as dust mites or pollen.
Poodles are known for their intelligence and active lifestyles; so it is important to feed them a healthy, well-rounded diet that meets their nutritional needs. High-quality, age-appropriate dog food is essential for your poodle. Look for balanced, protein-rich meals made with fresh, real ingredients, like chicken, fish, vegetables, and fruits that provide necessary vitamins and minerals. Low-fat and grain-free foods are optimal and can help keep their smart minds strong, their energy up, and their coats looking healthy.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle is relatively straightforward and may require the same steps you would need to take for any other pet. You should fence off any areas of your residence which are popssible danger zones for the dog, such as the pool or garden. Have essential supplies ready, such as a bed, toys, food, and treats. Establish future training for your Poodle so they have the foundation to be a responsible, well-behaved family pet.
While Poodles are not generally considered "big" breeds, they can be classified as large dogs. Poodles typically reach heights between 18 to 24 inches, and range in weight from 40 to 70 pounds, depending on the breed; making them taller than some smaller breeds but shorter than larger ones. On average, Poodles are bigger than other 'toy' breeds such as Chihuahuas or Maltese, however not all of them are as large as some of the biggest 'giant' breeds, such as St. Bernards and Great Danes.
Poodles are active dogs; they need plenty of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. It is important to provide your Poodle with a variety of exercise opportunities, including daily walks, runs, hikes, playtime, swimming, and agility courses. Depending on your Poodle's size and age, they may need 30 minutes to two hours of exercise every day. If you do not give your Poodle enough daily exercise, they may become frustrated and display destructive behavior due to boredom and pent-up energy.
Poodles are intelligent, loyal, and gentle by nature, making them great family dogs. They have an eagerness to please their owners, which makes them an excellent companion and a good fit for families. They are also incredibly versatile too, as they can fit into any different kinds of home environments; whether you live in a house or an apartment, Poodles can make a great addition. Additionally, Poodles are extremely patient and gentle with young children, so if you have children in your home, this breed would be a great choice.
The amount of time that you need to devote to training Poodles each day will vary depending on the age and ability of the Poodle. Generally, younger pups should be trained for a minimum of 10 minutes per day and more time can be increased based on the age and skill level of the pup. For adult Poodles, you may want to aim for 15-20 minutes of training per day. It's important to keep your Poodle motivated during your training and work on repetition so that your Poodle remembers the desired behavior.
