Questions & Answers
Poodles are often referred to as one of the smartest dog breeds, and with good reason! They have the capability to learn up to 200 words and commands, and can even be taught to dance and do math calculations! Poodles have a naturally curly coat that charmed early breeders in France, who used the dogs in water during duck hunts, enabling them to swim and dive better than other breeds. They come in a variety of sizes from the tiny Toy Poodle, to the Standard, Miniature, and Moyen.
It's impossible to say definitively whether or not you will have an allergic reaction to poodles, as individual sensitivity to allergens varies greatly. If you have a known allergy to pet dander, keeping a poodle may not be the best choice for you. It's best that you visit your doctor to determine if you are allergic and discuss any concerns prior to adopting or bringing a poodle into your home. Pet-specific allergy tests are available that can accurately measure your individual sensitivity and provide more detailed information to help determine if you should get a poodle.
Poodles should not be given any human foods or snacks that contain artificial additives, preservatives, artificial flavors, and food colorings, as these can all be dangerous for their health. Additionally, they should not be tempted to eat foods such as chocolate, cookies, candy, grapes, cherries, avocado and more as these foods can be toxic and cause vomiting, diarrhea, or even kidney failure. It is also important to keep bones away from poodles as these can splinter and cause choking or digestive problems.
Poodles do require special attention when it comes to housing and diet. They need regular grooming to ensure their coats stay healthy, and they need to be clipped regularly. Poodles also need to be socialized and trained to be well-behaved family members. In terms of diet, poodles have special nutritional needs, and it's important to feed them specialty dog food designed for poodles. Exercise is also important, as poodles need plenty of playtime to stay healthy.
Poodles come in four standard sizes, Toy, Miniature, Medium, and Standard. Each of these sizes have varying ranges of height and weights at maturity, which can range from three to fourteen inches in height at the shoulder, and eight to seventy pounds. For example, Toy Poodles typically reach 8 to 10 inches tall and weigh four to six pounds while the larger Standard Poodles grow to 15 inches and weigh 45 to 70 pounds. Additionally, Poodle hybrids such as the Cockapoo and Labradoodle exist in the various different sizes of Poodle.
Poodles need around 60-90 minutes of exercise per day. This includes activities such as a brisk walk, a run, or a jog. Enrolling in a doggie daycare or dog park is a great way to make sure your pup gets enough quality time for exercise. It's also important to incorporate mental stimulation in your routine. This could be through agility classes, playing fetch, or teaching them new tricks. Exercise is essential for your Poodle and can help them maintain a healthy weight, prevent boredom, and strengthen the bond between you and your pup.
Poodles can make wonderful companions for kids, as they are known to be loyal, obedient, and intelligent dogs. However, as with any pet, it is important to ensure that the dog is raised in a healthy, safe environment. This helps ensure that the dog receives appropriate socialization and is comfortable around all ages. If properly introduced, Poodles can quickly become part of the family. Generally, young children will need to be taught how to properly and respectfully interact with a dog. Proper behaviour and respect for animals is something any pet owner should expect from their children.
Poodles are incredibly intelligent dogs and can easily be trained with the proper guidance. To start, establish boundaries and house rules with a consistent routine. Set a specific quiet time each day and be consistent with when walking. Patience and positive reinforcement are key, so use plenty of treats and praise when your pup obeys a command. Begin with basic commands like 'sit' and 'stay.' Reward consistent obedience and do not wait too long to reward success. Then, gradually move on to more complicated commands, such as 'come,' 'wait' and 'heel.
