Questions & Answers
Poodles are one of the most popular breeds of dogs because they are loyal, friendly, make great family pets and are extremely intelligent. They can be easily taught advanced obedience skills and tricks since they are so keen and learn quickly. Not only are they one of the most intelligent dog breeds, Poodles are also one of the oldest known breeds. The breed dates all the way back to the 15th century in Germany! They come in three sizes, Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle.
Poodles are a hypoallergenic breed of dog, which can be a great option for those who suffer from allergies. Although some poodles may still shed, they normally have low levels of shedding along with their famous curly coat. Poodles are considered to be single-coat dogs, meaning they do not have the typical double layer of fur that causes other breeds to shed more. This is why they are sometimes referred to as non-shedding dogs.
While Poodles are considered a hearty and healthy breed, you should be very careful what you feed them. Many common human foods, such as chocolate, coffee, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins, can be toxic to Poodles and should never be given. Additionally, regular table scraps can impair your pup's health due to their high fat content, excessive salt, and potential for bacteria growth. Further, foods intended for other pet species may lack the balanced nutrition that a Poodle needs, and may cause deficiencies or toxicity.
Before getting a Poodle, there are a few essentials that every pet owner should consider. Food and water dishes, toys, a leash or comfortable harness for walking, a collar, and an identification tag are the basics. To really show some love, you should also think about buying a bed, brushes, dental care products, and puppy pads. Other items to consider include nail clippers, stain remover, and a hair dryer if you plan to groom your Poodle on your own.
Poodles are bred in four sizes – Standard, Miniature, Toy, and Teacup – all of which are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Standard Poodles reach up to 25 inches in height at the shoulder, with Miniature Poodles ranging between 10 and 15 inches, Toy Poodles standing 10 inches or less, and Teacup varieties being even smaller. Though their weights may vary by height, Standard Poodles usually weigh between 45 and 70 pounds.
Poodles are highly active dogs that require regular mental and physical exercise to be healthy, happy, and well-behaved. As a breed, they typically need at least an hour of physical exercise each day, which should include a walk or run and plenty of playtime. Additionally, they need stimulating mental activities and challenges to keep their minds occupied and alert. Stimulating the mind is just as important as physical activity, and boredom can lead to destructive behaviors that are common in the breed.
Poodles are generally friendly and intelligent dogs, making them great family companions and a common choice for those with children. Studies have also indicated that poodles tend to develop a strong bond with their owners, and quite often that translates to a bond with other family members, including children. Their strong attachment and social intelligence make it easy for them to form connections with kids, however, it's always important to supervise their interaction with small children and teach kids how to properly treat an animal.
Poodles are well known for their intelligence, as they are widely recognized as one of the smartest breeds of dog. They are highly trainable, have impressive memories, and excel in obedience competition. With consistent training and affectionate nurturing, Poodles can learn commands and language with remarkable quickness. They need both mental and physical activity to stay active and healthy, and thrive when they are part of the family and given attention on a regular basis. They are loyal and loving companions and often form strong bonds with their owners, showing sensitivity to their emotions and needs.
