Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a popular breed of dog that is proud, graceful, active, and intelligent. It is classified as a "Non-Sporting" breed by the American Kennel Club. Poodles tend to be loyal and protective, while also being friendly to people and other animals. They come in a variety of sizes, from the 6-9 inch tall Toy Poodle, all the way up to the Standard Poodle that stands at a height of 15 inches and weighs between 40-70 pounds.
Poodles are generally considered to be a breed that is hypoallergenic. The reason for this is that many of the allergies related to pet fur relates to what is known as dander, which is a microscopic organism which is often found in pet hair. Poodles are known to have a special coat, which is curly and also very dense, meaning that dander particles are not able to get stuck in the fur and hence, not released into the air. It is because of this lack of shedding that Poodles are seen as hypoallergenic.
It's important to be mindful of what you feed Poodles. Table scraps like onions, garlic, and chives can be toxic for them, as well as raisins, grapes, alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and fatty foods like bacon and sausage. Additionally, some human food, like peanut butter, can be difficult for Poodles to digest. Artificial sweeteners such as xylitol are extremely dangerous for Poodles and should never be given. Any type of edible item not specifically approved for dogs by a vet should be avoided.
To prepare your home for your new Poodle, it is important to make sure you have all the necessary equipment before your pup arrives. You'll need a standard-size crate to help your pup learn to sleep in the right places, as well as a bed and a few chew toys to keep him entertained. Additionally, set aside a specific area of your home for your pup to potty and/or have some supervised playtime.
Poodles come in four distinct sizes, including Toy, Miniature, Standard, and Giant. Toy Poodles typically weigh in between 4 and 6 pounds and stand up to 10 inches tall at the shoulder. Miniature Poodles usually weigh between 6 and 9 pounds, while standing at 11 to 14 inches tall. Standard Poodles are usually between 26 and 38 centimeters tall and can be seen weighing more than 40 pounds. Finally, Giant Poodles are most easily distinguished by their size, reaching up to 28 inches tall and weighing more than 70 pounds.
The amount of time you should walk your Poodle each day depends on a variety of factors, such as his age, your lifestyle, and any specific needs he may have. Generally, younger Poodles should be walked for at least 30 minutes a day, while more mature individuals should be walked for 45 minutes or more. Of course, if your pup is more active you may want to up that time a bit.
Poodles can make great family dogs! They are highly intelligent, loving, and loyal animals, making them an ideal pet for families. Due to their high levels of intelligence, poodles can easily be trained to obey commands and quickly learn their owners' rules and expectations. As a result, they are a low maintenance pet that doesn't require a lot of supervision. In addition, their hypoallergenic fur means that poodles are suitable for families with people who may have allergies.
Training a Poodle can vary in difficulty depending on the individual dog and the goals you set. Generally, Poodles are highly intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement. As they are considered people-oriented, they respond positively when they receive attention and good behavior is rewarded. When training a Poodle, it's important to keep your sessions short and sweet as this breed can become easily bored. Additionally, a consistent approach is key. Consistency allows you to stay in control of your Poodle and helps establish a bond based on mutual trust and respect.
