Questions & Answers
Poodles are a unique breed of dog that are often associated with high-pressure living. Beyond their well-known intelligence, they boast a range of unique traits that make them an interesting breed to learn about. For instance, they have thick curly fur that is easily groomed and made into a wide variety of interesting styles. Unlike some breeds they do not shed much at all and are seemingly hypoallergenic, lending to their popularity with allergy sufferers.
Poodles are considered a low-shedding breed, which makes them especially attractive to those who don't want to manage pet hair around their home. Not only do poodles shed very little, but their wiry coat requires regular brushing and clipping to ensure that their skin and fur remain healthy. On average, poodles will shed less than several other breeds of dogs, but the amount of shedding can also vary based on size and whether they are purebred or mixed breeds.
Poodles should not be fed any food items that are high in sugar, such as candy, heavily processed foods, and sugary drinks. Additionally, prevent them from gaining access to foods such as grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, and macadamia nuts, as these items can be dangerous and even potentially fatal for Poodles in some cases. Certain foods can also cause allergic reactions, so be careful when introducing new foods and monitor your pup's health closely.
Preparing for your new Poodle should include gathering the necessary supplies, setting consistent rules, researching the breed's individual needs, and finding a vet you can trust. Prior to bringing your new pet home, make sure you have the proper supplies such as food and water bowls, a collar and leash, crate, bedding, and toys. Additionally, from the start, establish consistent daily routines for when and how your Poodle should be fed, exercised, groomed, and trained. Doing so will help with overall obedience and understanding of what behaviors are acceptable.
Poodle puppies can vary significantly in size, as there are several different varieties of Poodle, each with differing expected heights and weights. Toy and Miniature Poodles typically range from 10-15 inches tall and weigh 4-10 pounds, whereas Standard Poodles are usually 15 inches or taller and weigh between 45-70 pounds. The adult size of your Poodle puppy will depend heavily upon their genetics and the type of Poodle they are. Many Poodle breeders, however, can provide a general estimate of an individual puppy's expectation for eventual adult size.
Walking your Poodle is not only important for getting the exercise it needs to stay healthy, but also for your furry friend's mental stimulation. How much to walk your Poodle will depend on the age and energy level of your individual pup, but most Poodle owners suggest at least 20 minutes per day. If your Poodle is younger and energetic, it may require more, such as up to an hour of walking per day.
Poodles are known for being extremely loving and loyal to their owners, which often extends to children. Generally speaking, when poodles are properly socialized and trained from a young age, they can make excellent playmates for kids. Poodles are an intelligent breed and as long as they receive proper training and guidance, they have the potential to get along with kids very well. However, it is important to remember that all dogs have unique personalities and may react differently to different stimuli.
The amount of training time required for Poodles varies on a number of factors, including the age of the Poodle, their individual skill and energy level, as well as your goals for training them. Generally speaking, however, it is recommended to give Poodles at least 30 minutes of dedicated training time each day. During this time, you should focus on repeatable exercises like basic commands, agility tasks, and providing mental stimulation. Training a Poodle for more than 30 minutes a day can offer further benefits, such as greater obedience and faster gains in skill.
