Questions & Answers
Poodles are an elegant, intelligent breed of dog and are part of the 'Non-Sporting' Group in the American Kennel Club classifications. They are known for their flowing, corded coat and for their grace and agility. Poodles come in a few different sizes including Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Poodles typically weigh 40-70 pounds and stand between 15-21 inches at the shoulder. Miniature Poodles usually weigh 15-17 pounds and are 11-14 inches tall.
Managing allergies with Poodles can be an effective strategy for people with allergies. It is important to choose a breed of Poodle that has low to no dander and a tightly-curled coat, like a Toy or Miniature Poodle. This type of Poodle will usually produce less dander in the environment, which can help minimize allergy symptoms. Additionally, Poodles need regular grooming to keep their tight curls in tact. This grooming reduces the amount of loose hair in the environment, which can also help reduce allergy symptoms in people.
Poodles should not be fed foods containing large amounts of fat, such as processed meats, cooked bones or fast foods. Foods with added preservatives or artificial flavors are also not recommended for poodles. It is important to avoid chocolate and anything with caffeine, as these substances can be toxic to dogs. In addition, feeding a poodle raw meats or eggs, dairy products, fruits with pits, or seeds can cause digestive upset, choking hazards, and food-borne illnesses.
Poodle breeds, both Standard and Miniature, do indeed have several special requirements that a responsible pet owner should be aware of. Grooming is essential to the breed, as they require semi-regular clipping and brushing of their coats to ensure their hair does not get too matted. It is similarly important to trim the tips of their paws and clean their ears regularly to prevent buildup of bacteria and yeast. They should also receive regular check-ups with a veterinarian to ensure their nails are in good condition and their teeth are kept clean.
The size of your Poodle puppy is dependent on multiple factors. Primarily, it will be based on the size of the breed. Standard Poodles are the largest variety and usually reach a maximum height of around 15 inches and weight of around 45-70 pounds at adulthood. Miniature Poodles typically reach a maximum of around 10-15 inches and weigh around 15-30 pounds at adulthood. Toy Poodles reach a maximum of around 10 inches and weigh around 6-9 pounds at adulthood.
While every Poodle is unique and they may all have different preferences, in general, Poodles do like to swim. The breed is known for its athleticism and love of the water, so many Poodle owners report that their dogs are quite fond of diving into the pool or going for a long swim in a lake. They can also pick up on swimming very quickly because of their intelligence. Naturally, it's still important to provide some supervision since the breed was not specifically bred to be a swimmer, and any dog can get into trouble if they stay in the water too long.
Poodles are a friendly breed that generally gets along with other animals, including cats, birds, and other dogs. They usually display a particular fondness toward other dogs (as they tend to be quite social creatures). Generally speaking, with proper introduction and socialization, Poodles often form strong, lasting friendships with other pets. They may have an energetic spirit and can sometimes be a little stubborn, but for the most part they will easily accept other animals into their home.
Training a Poodle can be a rewarding experience if you are willing to put in the appropriate time and effort. It's important to remember that Poodles are highly intelligent dogs with strong protective instincts and a desire to please their owners. With the right training techniques and plenty of positive reinforcement, teaching your Poodle commands and tricks can be relatively straightforward. To get the most out of your training, however, it is important to understand your Poodle's natural behavior and take care to praise and reward desired behavior to encourage positive behavior.
