Questions & Answers
Poodles are an incredibly interesting breed of breeds. Unlike most other breeds, the Poodle has a variety of recognized sizes and coat types. Miniature Poodles, who are 11 inches (28 cm) or under at the withers, and Standard Poodles, who are 15 inches (38 cm) or more, can be found in a densel-coated, corded, or a sparsely-coated version.
Poodles can be considered hypoallergenic due to their low-shedding coats. In short, hypoallergenic means causing fewer allergic reactions. As a result, some people who have allergies, and cannot usually have a pet, may be able to tolerate a poodle as it will not shed as much as other pets. However, it is important to note that there is no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog or pet.
Poodles should not be fed chocolate, nuts, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, raw fish, or avocado. These items can cause digestive upset, vomiting, or worse. High-fat or sticky foods, such as bacon, sausage, fried snacks, and excessive table scraps can lead to weight gain and health issues. Additionally, certain bones, such as cow hooves and chicken wings, can break and splinter in the intestines, leading to blockages and even death. Some dog treats are also unhealthy: they can be too high in fat or have too much sugar.
To prepare for introducing a new Poodle into your home, it is important to do some research. Start by learning about the needs and personality of the breed so you can decide what type of lifestyle will best suit your new addition. For example, many Poodles need regular grooming and require lots of activity like walks and playtime. Additionally, you'll need to think about nutrition and make sure you have the necessary accoutrements; from food, supplies, and toys to a leash, collar, and bed.
It is impossible to accurately predict the size of your Poodle puppy as it reaches its adult size, as this depends on a variety of factors. These include the puppy's parents genetics, your puppy's gender, and your puppy's nutrition and exercise plan. Generally, Toy Poodle puppies weigh between 5-10 lbs once adult, whereas a Standard Poodle is usually between 45-70 lbs. It is typical for a Miniature Poodle to range between 10-20 lbs once they reach adulthood.
Walking your Poodle is an essential part of keeping it healthy and happy. The amount of exercise that’s needed varies by age and size of the Poodle, but as a general rule, a full-grown Poodle should receive at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. If your adult Poodle is overweight, then it's recommended to increase the amount of exercise to at least 40 to 50 minutes a day. If your Poodle is a puppy, then you should start out with shorter and slower walks, gradually increasing the duration and pace of the exercise as it gets older.
Poodles can make great family companions and are often very compatible with children. They are generally intelligent, friendly, and love to be around people. Poodles tend to bond closely with their owners, so they could become an important part of your family. Since they are eager to please, with proper training a poodle will likely do its best to get along with children. However, as with any pet, supervision is always advisable when children are interacting with poodles.
Training your Poodle is an important part of teaching them how to behave and also building trust with them. When beginning the training process it's important to use positive reinforcement to show that you are pleased when the behavior is correct. Start with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Begin to use short sessions multiple times a day to teach each command, provide lots of treats and verbal praise when they have done it correctly. As they become more confident, introduce longer sessions to allow for other skills such as the 'off command' or 'wait'. Practice these tricks in different environments and situations.
