Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a breed of dog that is easily recognized by its curly, puffy fur. It usually has a black, white, silver, brown, apricot, or cream-colored coat. They are highly intelligent and sociable, making them excellent family companions. Poodles are athletic and excel in agility, obedience, tracking, and retrieving. They are friendly with other animals and people and can even serve as therapy dogs. They aren’t prone to excessive barking, but they will let you know if a stranger is close by.
Poodles are actually classified as a hypoallergenic breed, meaning they produce low levels of dander and, therefore, shed less than other breeds. Generally speaking, poodles won't shed hair, but they may blow their coat in the Spring and/or Fall depending on the climate in which they live. Some owners even report having no shedding at all from their Poodle! This lack of shedding makes them a great fit for anyone sensitive to dander, but don't worry they still need regular grooming to keep them healthy and free of matting.
Poodles should avoid any type of food with a lot of sugar and fat, as well as corn and wheat, which could cause stomach upsets. Fruits with pits or seeds should also be avoided as they could be a choking hazard. Garlic, onions, and chives may cause anemia, so it's best to steer clear of them. Raw fish and eggs increase the risk of Salmonella, so these should also be avoided. Human food, such as chocolate, grapes, and avocados can be very dangerous for poodles and should never be fed.
Before getting a Poodle, it is important to make sure you have the right supplies and equipment. At the very least, you should purchase food and water bowls, a collar and leash, grooming supplies such as brushes and shampoos, toys and treats for training and rewards, puppy pads, a crate for a safe and contained sleeping space, and a bed specifically designed for your pup. Additionally, you may want to invest in a pet gate for times when you need to limit the area that your Poodle can access.
It's difficult to determine ahead of time exactly how large your Poodle puppy will grow to be due to varying growth patterns. On average, a fully-grown Poodle tends to be roughly 10-15 inches tall, and weigh between 10-70 pounds. Depending on the specific breed, the size category when fully grown can be Toy (under 10 pounds), Miniature (10-15 pounds), or Standard (over 15 pounds).
Poodles are believed to enjoy swimming, due to their history as water retrievers. As a result, they are often referred to as 'water dogs.' Given the opportunity, Poodles may often enthusiastically take part in water activities. Additionally, the Poodle's water-resistant coat is designed for swimming. Swimming is a great exercise for these dogs, helping them to stay healthy, fit, and happy. Poodles also benefit from swimming because it allows them to exercise their body in an activity that they find enjoyable.
Poodles can make wonderful family pets for households with children. They tend to be gentle and patient, so they are typically well-suited for a home with young kids. Poodles are also intelligent and highly trainable, so with proper instruction, they learn how to behave around children. Poodles tend to be good natured and playful, making them a great choice for someone looking to have a loyal, loving family pet that the whole family can enjoy. With regular socialization, proper training, and plenty of exercise, a Poodle can make an excellent companion for children.
Absolutely! Poodles have a long-standing reputation as one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. As a matter of fact, according to many behavioral experts, Poodles are the second most intelligent canine breed, ranking just behind the Border Collie. Poodles learn quickly and respond well to both positive and negative reinforcement. They are also known for their strong memory and ability to recognize commands after a single repetition. Not only can these canines be trained to perform complex tasks, they are also quite social and enjoy interacting with their owners.
