Questions & Answers
A Poodle is a type of dog that is known for its intelligence, active personality, and fluffy, curly coat. They come in three sizes – miniature, standard, and toy. They were originally bred as a water retriever, which explains their unique coat. It is wiry and waterproof, designed to help them swim and protect them from cold temperatures. They are often seen with a creative and stylish haircut, which is designed to keep their coat healthy and reduce their shedding.
Poodles are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed, meaning that they are less likely to cause allergies for people with sensitivities. However, it is important to manage your allergies if you wish to have a Poodle in your home. First, it is important to determine the cause of your allergies. Once the cause of allergies is known, you should try to reduce the amount of contact you have with the allergen. For example, if dander is the trigger, make sure to regularly brush and bathe your Poodle to reduce the amount of airborne dander.
Poodles are very smart and their diet should reflect that. Feed them a balanced and nutritious diet with plenty of protein and complex carbohydrates. Look for high-quality dog foods with good-quality proteins like chicken, salmon, and beef and complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, oats, and sweet potatoes. Vegetables like spinach, kale, carrots and even green peas are healthy foods that you can supplement their diet with as well. Avoid feeding them foods that are very high in fat, sugar or salt as these can cause health issues.
Preparing your home for a new Poodle can be exciting. First, you will want to provide safety and security for your new family member. Make sure the home is well-secured, with gates on stairs and balconies to avoid falls. Puppy-proof your home as you would for a young child – cover electrical outlets, secure cleaning solutions, and do away with sharp or small objects that might present a hazard. Puppies need a comfortable place to call their own. Get an appropriate bed, toys, and treat dispensers for your pup to keep him engaged.
Poodles come in four distinct size varieties: standard, miniature, toy, and teacup. The standard Poodle stands tall at 15 inches or more in height and weighs an average of 55-70 pounds. Miniature Poodles are only 15 inches or less in height, typically weighing between 12-18 pounds. Toy Poodles are an even smaller variety, measuring 10 inches and under, and typically weighing 5-7 pounds. The smallest of all Poodle types is the teacup variety, standing up to 10 inches tall and generally weighing 4 pounds or less.
The number of minutes per day you should walk your Poodle will depend on the age and activity level of your specific pup. Generally speaking, Poodles should get at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily, which is typically comprised of two 15-minute walks and additional play time. Since Poodles are an intelligent breed, they tend to be more active than other dogs. So, if possible, providing your Poodle with more than 30-45 minutes of moderate exercise every day is recommended.
While there is no guarantee that any two pets will get along with each other, Poodles are generally friendly towards other pets. They are considered highly trainable and intelligent, which can make them easier to integrate into a home with other pets. If there is any cause for concern, caregivers can gradually introduce Poodles to other pets and monitor their interactions to ensure everyone is safe and comfortable. With patience and positive reinforcement, Poodles are usually able to make friendly and mutually beneficial relationships with other animals.
The amount of minutes per day that you need to train your Poodle depends on the age and experience of the pup. Generally, you should plan to train your Poodle for between 10-15 minutes each day when starting off. As the pup becomes more experienced, you can gradually increase that time up to 30 minutes per day, but you should never exceed that amount. It's important to remember that repetition is key when it comes to training Poodles, so although the time frame is short, consistent practice everyday makes a big difference.
