Questions & Answers
Poodles are a very intelligent, loyal, and loving breed of dog. They come in a variety of sizes from the Miniature which can be as small as 10 inches tall, to the Standard, which can range up to 24 inches. They are unique because their unique coats can be clipped and shaped into a desired style. Although Poodles are known to be long-lived breeds, they need regular grooming, exercise, and human interaction in order to be healthy and happy. Poodles are also very trainable and can easily learn commands and tricks, making them great family pets.
Poodles have an iconic coat that sets them apart from other breeds of dogs. It is a soft and curly fur, which usually comes in a variety of solid colors, such as black, white, blue, silver, and apricot, or multi-colors such as white and black, blue and white, and gray and apricot. Poodle coats are made up of a wooly undercoat and a softer topcoat, making them well-suited for cold climates.
Poodles should not be fed foods like garlic, onions, grapes, or raisins as these can cause gastrointestinal issues and even renal failure. It is also not good to feed them fatty meats, such as bacon, sausage, or processed meats, since they are higher in fat and can cause obesity and pancreatitis. Additionally, it's best to avoid sugar and sugary treats as these can harm teeth and have other adverse health impacts. Chocolate should never be fed to a Poodle as it can be highly toxic.
Preparing a home for a new Poodle is an important part of responsible pet ownership. To ensure your home is a safe and happy environment for your pup, it's important to provide enough space for exercise, comfortable bedding, a reliable and nutritiously balanced diet, toys, and a designated spot for bladder and bowel needs. Exercise is essential for all Poodles, so it's important to provide plenty of space and toys for physical activity in or around your home, such as a secure fenced-in backyard or a nearby dog park.
Poodles come in four standard sizes, based on height: Standard (over 15 inches), Miniature (over 10 inches but under 15 inches), Toy (10 inches and under) and the rarely seen Teacup (under 4-6 pounds). The Standard can weigh in anywhere between 40-70 pounds while the miniature and toys range from 4 to 15 pounds. All sizes come with a curly, wavy or corded coat and have the same active, smart, loyal personality that Poodles are known for.
Poodles are high energy, active breeds that have an enthusiasm for a wide variety of activities. From exploring the park to playing a game of fetch, they have the capacity to thrive in any active environment. Poodles are especially well-suited for agility and obedience training, where they can show off their incredible athletic abilities and intelligence. Plus, they are friendly and amicable with people and other animals, making them great companions for an active lifestyle. Poodles make wonderful running, hiking and swim buddies for anyone looking for a courageous companion within a wide range of activities.
Poodles typically get along well with other pets, although as with any pet, the experience can be varied. Poodles are social dogs and enjoy the presence of other pets if introduced to them in the right environment. They respond well to training and often learn to accept and even prefer the company of other pets if used to it. Many owners have had success with introducing their Poodle to other pets, either cats, rabbits or other small animals.
Training a Poodle takes dedication and patience. Begin by establishing yourself as the leader in the relationship. A Poodle should have respect for you, not fear. Establish clear rules and boundaries with your pup and ensure that everyone in your home is on the same page. It's important to consistently enforce those rules and reward desired behaviors with positive reinforcement. Have a plan for the types of behaviors you'd like to reinforce and be consistent in your methods. Praise your pup for doing something correctly and take the time to show him how to act instead of focusing on what not to do.
