American Labradoodles Vs. Australian Labradoodles: Can You Spot the Difference?

If you’re looking into getting a Labradoodle puppy, you may wonder what the difference is between an American Labradoodle and an Australian Labradoodle.

Although these dogs are close relatives, they are entirely separate breeds. Australian Labradoodles are a breed with many surface similarities to Labradoodles. However, they have some notable features that set them apart.

Labradoodle Features

Normal Labradoodles are simply a cross between a Poodle and a Labrador. However, not all Labradoodle breeding lines are the same. Many dogs are closer to the original Labrador and Poodle ancestors.

We call the first generation of puppies born to the Poodle and Labrador parents the F1 generation. If these F1 puppies then breed with other Labradoodles of the same generation, they’ll produce F2 puppies. When F2 dogs breed with other Labradoodles…well by now you probably get the picture.

Whether a puppy is F1 or F25, they are still considered a Labradoodle. There are a lot of different names for these dogs, including:

  • Labradoodle
  • Early Generation Labradoodle
  • British Labradoodle
  • American Labradoodle

These four terms are all used to refer to dogs that come from just Poodles and Labradors. To make things easy, we’ll just use the term Labradoodle for these dogs.

Australian Labradoodle Features

Unlike normal Labradoodles, Australian Labradoodles are a mix of more than just two breeds. In fact, there are actually six breeds that are mixed to make Australian Labradoodles. Here are all of the breeds that go into the mix:

  • Poodle
  • Labrador
  • English Cocker Spaniel
  • American Cocker Spaniel
  • Curly Coat Retriever
  • Irish Water Spaniel

That’s a lot of breeds for one dog. But does it make a significant difference? Although both Labradoodle breeds do have similarities, they often look and behave quite differently.

Differences Between Labradoodles And Australian Labradoodles

Here are some of the main differences between these two Labradoodle breeds.

Breeding Consistency

Many Labradoodles are only a few generations removed from the original poodle and labrador parents. Because of this, there’s a lot less consistency in terms of appearance and size for Labradoodles.

Many puppies of first generation Labradoodles will revert back to many of the traits of either a Poodle or a Labrador. Instead of looking like a mix of the two breeds, they appear to be much closer to one of the original breeds.

Australian Labradoodles have longer breeding lines. This means that most puppies are part of a multi generational breeding program, which regularizes appearance and size.

Labradoodles are easy to breed, since you only need a Poodle and a Labrador. This means that new breeding lines are started often. However, Australian Labradoodles require six breeds, making it harder to start a new line. This means that most puppies you find will come from multiple generations of Australian Labradoodles.

Difference In Shedding

Many Labradoodle lines are fairly close to their original Labrador ancestor. That means that they are much more likely to have a shedding coat that is similar to that of a Labrador.

Australian Labradoodles have been bred for more than 30 years without mixing. This has allowed breeders to develop coats that don’t shed, as they are far from the original labrador line.

Less Energetic Temperament

First generation Labradoodles often are bundles of energy. They love to run around and jump up. Although this high energy is well suited to some dog owners, it can be a bit overwhelming for some people, especially those who have reduce mobility.

Australian Labradoodles tend to be a bit calmer. They love to play and engage with other dogs and people, but are less hyperactive than Labradoodles. This makes them an excellent dog to have around small children.

They are also a bit less likely to jump up on people. This makes Australian Labradoodles a good choice for older people, were jumping could be a safety risk.

Keep in mind that Labradoodles are often calm, patient dogs. But because the breeding lines are usually less established, the traits of puppies tend to be a bit more unpredictable than Australian Labradoodles.

Two Unique Dog Breeds

Both Labradoodles and their Australian cousins are excellent dog breeds, and puppies from both breeds would make an excellent new member of just about any family. But the two breeds do have their differences,

If you want a high energy dog and don’t mind a bit of shedding, a Labradoodle is a great choice. If, however, you want a dog that you can count on to be a bit more relaxed, then you might be better off choosing an Australian Labradoodle.
