Questions & Answers
Bernedoodles are a relatively new breed of dog that is a hybrid combination of the Bernese mountain dog and the poodle. They are known for their intelligence and their calm, loving temperament. Bernedoodles can range in size and color as they can be a combination of both the Bernese mountain dog and the poodle. They tend to have curly coats that vary from wavy to curly, and can be any color from black to dark brown and even white. They are usually very friendly and love to be around people.
Generally speaking, Bernedoodles are not associated with causing allergies in their owners. However, since some Bernedoodles are not considered hypoallergenic, it may be best to consult an allergist to determine whether specific Bernedoodles will cause an allergic reaction. The Bernedoodles that have been crossbred with a poodle tend to produce fewer allergens and are considered more hypoallergenic than other Bernedoodles that are not crossbred with the poodle.
It is important to be aware of what foods may be harmful to Bernedoodles. The best way to know what not to feed them is to research what types of food they should not eat and contact a veterinarian for advice. Generally, Bernedoodles should avoid grains, foods high in fat, processed foods, items containing excess salt and sugar, and anything very rich or spicy. Some fruit and vegetables, such as onions, grapes, and avocados, can also be dangerous for Bernedoodles.
Bernedoodles, like all breeds of dog, require a diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level, regular exercise, proper grooming, veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and de-worming according to the advice of a veterinarian. In addition to the basic needs of any dog, Bernedoodles may have additional requirements depending on their particular mix. For example, some may have longer coats that require more frequent brushing than short-haired dogs, and some may have a curlier, thicker coat that may require special conditioning.
The size of your Bernedoodle puppy will depend on a variety of factors, including the size of the parents, the mix of breeds, and their individual genetic makeup. Bernedoodles are usually classified as either Standard, Miniature, or Toy. Additionally, the size may change as the puppy grows to adulthood. Standard Bernedoodles generally weigh between 50 and 90 pounds, while Miniature Bernedoodles usually weigh between 25 and 50 pounds, and Toy Bernedoodles tend to be under 25 pounds.
Bernedoodles have a natural inclination to be water friendly because their Poodle parent can swim very well. While the Bernese Mountain Dog parent is not considered a water breed and prefers to stay out of the water, many Bernedoodles have an instinctive joy for swimming. In most cases, Bernedoodles take to the water easily and enjoy in short and long swims, splashing, and exploring.
Bernedoodles can make wonderful family pets and can be great for first-time dog owners too. They are loyal, loving, and responsive to training, and don't require much grooming. Bernedoodles are prized for their intelligence and their need for vigorous exercise, making them great exercise buddies. They are also easily adaptable and can transition into different lifestyles and living situations with relative ease. Additionally, Bernedoodles are very social and enjoy the company of their humans and other family pets, which is great for those who want to have a true companion.
Training Bernedoodles typically does not require a large amount of time every day; rather, consistency and frequency of the training is more important than duration. Depending on your goals and your Bernedoodle's age, you will likely want to spend at least 10-20 minutes each day teaching new commands or refreshing old ones. Additionally, taking your Bernedoodle for daily walks and engaging in activities such as agility, tracking, and games are good ways to exercise your Bernedoodle's mind and body.
