Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are classified as non-sporting dogs according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). Also known as Frenchies, French Bulldogs originated in England in the 19th Century. They were bred from English Bulldogs and a local French breed. They are considered a medium breed and typically stand between 11 and 12 inches tall and weigh up to 28 pounds. They are intelligent, alert, and have a strong will. Characterized by being physically strong and having a long face, they have a large, heavy-set head and a short, muscular, broad-chested body.
French Bulldogs, due to their short hair, are relatively low shedding dogs. While no dog is completely non-shedding, French Bulldogs do tend to shed less than other breeds. They shed their loose hairs in clumps, making them more manageable than other breeds that shed their fur over larger surfaces. French Bulldogs require frequent brushing to reduce shedding and help distribute natural oils that keep their coats shiny and healthy. Bathing or shampooing them once a month can help thin excess fur.
French Bulldogs need to eat high-quality food that is appropriate for their size and energy level. Avoid feeding them foods that are too high in fat, sugar, salt, or preservatives as these could lead to future health issues, including obesity and diabetes. Foods that French Bulldogs should never be fed include grapes and raisins, as these can be toxic; onions, garlic, and chives, as these have been linked to causing anemia in dogs; and raw fish, as some can cause problems such as vitamin B deficiency.
Preparing your home for a French Bulldog is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. To make sure your pup is safe and comfortable, make sure you've assembled all the necessary supplies, such as their bed, leash, collar, and food and water bowls. You'll want to ensure they have plenty of space to explore and that any objects in their way are secured. There should also be a space where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed and a secure fenced area in the yard if they are spending time outdoors.
French Bulldogs come in a variety of sizes, ranging from small to large. Although some breeders may offer different sizes of the same dog, the standard French Bulldog size is between 18-28 pounds when fully grown. In some cases, depending on the breeder and the genetic traits of the parents, French Bulldogs may be within a few pounds of the standard size range.
French Bulldogs need a moderate amount of exercise to remain healthy and happy. Generally, a vigorous playtime session of fifteen to thirty minutes each day will keep them properly exercised, although they should be monitored to make sure they do not overdo it or become too hot due to their shortened noses. Longer walks, which could include running, jogging, or hiking, are also beneficial but should not exceed periods of one hour at a time. Swimming is an excellent choice of exercise to strengthen the muscles and help keeps joints, bones, and tendons in good condition.
French Bulldogs are a great choice for families looking for a new canine companion as they are affectionate, playful, and loyal. Their small size makes them an ideal addition to homes with limited space, and they have the added benefit of being low maintenance when it comes to exercise and grooming. French Bulldogs are notoriously gentle, and their easy-going nature makes them great family pets. Some even have a knack for making people laugh with their clownish personalities. They are also known for getting along well with children, and you can rest easy knowing these dogs are trustworthy and reliable.
French Bulldogs are known for being highly intelligent dogs, having a reputation for being clever and eager to please. They are relatively easy to train, and their focus and desire for approval make it easier to teach them commands and tricks. They have a strong understanding of commands and are able to remember both complex and simple verbal cues. Furthermore, Frenchies can often problem-solve and use critical thinking with relative ease, making them a popular choice for many canine lovers. Their easy-going, loyal and affectionate nature makes them great companions and they display understanding and attentiveness to their owners.
