Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting characteristics of the Havaneses breed is their multitalented disposition. They are versatile working dogs with an aptitude for performance activities and a can-do attitude with any task they put their minds to. They are active, intelligent, and eager to please which makes them perfect for most adventures and activities. Their exuberant personality can be seen in plenty of activities such as their love of retrieving and agility, strutting their stuff in the conformation ring, having fun in Rally and Obedience, and even participating in therapy visits.
The truth is that there is no definite answer to this question as it could vary from person to person. While some individuals may be allergic to Havaneses, it is impossible to predict any potential allergies in advance. If you already suffer from allergies, then it is important to talk to a qualified allergist before considering the adoption of a Havaneses. Alternatively, you could consider getting a hypoallergenic breed if allergies are a major concern.
Havaneses are often referred to as the aristocrats of the canine world and as such, they have discriminating taste, right down to their food. While it ultimately comes down to the individual pup, a good quality, protein-rich dry kibble leads the pack. For extra flavor and freshness, mix in some sardines, salmon, tuna or other fish, boiled chicken or eggs, or special treats specifically formulated for Havaneses. Always keep the snacks healthy and avoid processed or sugary foods, adding no more than 10% to their daily nutrition.
Before getting a Havanese, it's important to have the essentials that your pup will need. This includes things like a comfortable bed, enough food and water bowls, toys, treats, grooming supplies, a tag with the owner's contact information, a leash and collar, dog-proofed living area, and an approved crate. It's also good to have an emergency contact information list for veterinary clinics and a list of the items your pup will need to have an annual examination.
Haavanese are small dogs traditionally weighing between 7 to 13 pounds. They tend to range in size from 8 to 11 inches in height at the shoulder. While all Haavaneses are uniformly small, they can vary slightly in stature and weight. Some males may reach 13 pounds, while some females may stay as small as 7 pounds. Generally, the breed's ears, eyes, muzzle, and legs should remain in proportion to its small size. Regardless of their size, Haavaneses are popular for their intelligence, companionability, and fun-loving disposition.
Generally, Havaneses are quite fond of water and, consequently, many of them enjoy swimming. This is due to the Havaneses' petite body size and natural buoyancy in the water. Often, they can be seen certainly taking a dip in a pool, a lake, or even a bathtub! Because Havaneses were originally bred to be companions, they like activities that make them feel loved and nothing does that better than quality time spent with their humans in the pool. This breed's eagerness to explore and interact with its environment makes swimming even more fun.
Havaneses typically get along very well with kids. They are an incredibly affectionate, social breed of dog, which makes them well-suited for families with children. Havaneses usually form strong bonds with children, and enjoy spending time and playing with them. As with all dog breeds, it's important to remember that young kids need to be taught about proper behavior around animals, such as to respect a dog's space and teach them not to pull its tail or ears.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to Havaneses training each day depends on the individual and your goals for the dog. Generally speaking, it is recommended to dedicate at least twenty minutes per day to ensure your pup is properly trained. However, you should strive to give your pup closer to thirty minutes of your undivided attention each day in order to maximize progress. Additionally, you should set aside regular play time so that your Havaneses gets plenty of mental and physical stimulation.
