Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a toy-sized member of the Bichon family, originating from the island of Cuba. They offer the perfect blend of a playful, spunky personality in a small, cuddly size. They are known for their lively spirit and intelligence, making them the perfect companion for almost any family. An adult Havanese stands between 8-12 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 7 to 13 pounds. They have a long, silky coat of hair that requires regular professional grooming in order to keep the hair looking its best and mat-free.
The Havanese coat is a medium length, double layered, silky coat that is unique to the breed. It usually has natural curls or ringlets and lots of body. The coat should be Shiny, light, and soft to the touch. The coat can be any of range of colors including white, cream, chocolate, gold, silver, and black with a variety of patterns including multiple color combinations. Maintenance requires brushing at least a few times a week to avoid mats and tangles, and regular professional grooming that should include trimming of the ears, legs, and bottom.
Yes, Havaneses have specific dietary needs due to their high-energy personalities. A diet consisting of quality lean proteins, healthy unsaturated fats, and complex carbohydrates that are low in sugar is recommended. Supplementation with omega fatty acids and vitamins, such as B-complex and vitamin E, will help to ensure the Havaneses is getting all the nutrition it needs. In addition to this, Havaneses also need plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated. Giving them a quality probiotic is also important for their overall gastrointestinal health.
Before getting a Havanese, there are a few essentials you should have that will make the transition easier for both of you. Start by getting the basic items like a crate, food and water bowls, and a leash and collar. Having some games and treats to help with training is also a good idea. Additionally, a bed, grooming supplies, and lots of toys to keep them busy are must-haves. Investing in a good vacuum and lint roller is also highly recommended, since Havanese are very high-shedding dogs.
Havaneses are small dogs when compared to larger breeds; however, they are considered an average-sized breed according to the American Kennel Club's official breed standards. On average, Havaneses typically weigh anywhere from six to thirteen pounds and they typically are nine to twelve inches tall. Depending on the context of the question, the answer may slightly vary as more pet owners are classifying their Havaneses as toy breeds as their size has become increasingly popular and desired.
The amount of time you should walk your Havanese can vary, depending on your pup’s age and energy levels. As a general rule however, daily walks for around 30 to 45 minutes, ideally twice daily, should be plenty for healthy Havanese. Be mindful of the the ambient temperature when scheduling outside activities, as Havanese usually have a thin coat that does not offer much protection in extreme conditions. Walking in the cooler morning or evening is usually best. If you have limited time for walks, 15 minutes twice daily should be enough to keep your pup in good shape.
Havaneses generally do get along with other pets; however, it depends on the individual pet's personality. They often form strong attachments to their owners, making them loyal and loving to those in their family. They are people-oriented dogs and often like to be included in family activities. This same characteristic that contributes to their loyalty and lovingness can make them wary of other animals if they sense that they are not welcomed by their owner. For this reason, it is important to properly socialize the Havaneses so that they can learn to trust and get along with other pets in the household.
There is no single answer to this question; the amount of training time for a Havanese depends on a variety of factors including its age, energy level, training objectives, and the specific training methods being used. It's important to remember that not all Havanese require the same amount of training. As a general rule, it's recommended to provide at least 10 to 15 minutes of training per day for a young Havaneses, increasing this amount with age and experience. Furthermore, providing adequate mental stimulation, such as playing activity-based games, is just as important as physical exercise.
