Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a toy breed of companion dogs that are also known as Havana Silk Dogs, and are believed to have originated in Cuba. They are classified as a member of the Bichon family, along with Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, and Maltese. Havaneses weigh 6-9 pounds and usually reach a height of up to 9 inches. They have a fine, and often curly, silky coat that can come in any color, although it is most commonly seen seen in shades of white, cream, champagne, black and sable.
Havaneses are often considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. This is partially due to their small size, low maintenance coat, and abundance of curly hair. This combination often leads to fewer allergens than seen in other larger breeds. With that said, no breed is completely hypoallergenic and no two individuals within a breed are the same, so it is still possible for an individual Havaneses to produce more allergens than others. Pet owners should consult their local veterinarians to determine if a Havaneses may be suitable for their home based on their individual factors.
Havaneses have unique nutritional needs, so finding the best dog food for them can be challenging. Consider consulting your veterinarian on what type of food is best for your particular dog. Brands that make small-breed kibble specifically formulated for Havaneses can be beneficial for their recommended nutritional needs. A quality food should contain high levels of protein, grains, fruits and vegetables to provide a balanced diet. Be sure to discuss with your vet how much and how often to feed your Havaneses for optimal health and wellbeing.
To prepare your home for your new Havanese, the first thing to do is to ensure that any safety hazards are removed from the home. Make sure items that are small, toxic, or sharp are stored away. Next, create a comfortable environment for your new pet. Have a designated sleeping area that's comfortable and quiet, as well as an area with plenty of toys and a spot for them to relax in your home. Finally, be mindful of the temperature in your house. Havanese are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so be sure that your space is comfortable and safe for them.
The size of a Havanese puppy can vary considerably, although they usually stay within a certain range. On average, adult Havanese will be between 8 and 11 inches tall, and will weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. Generally, they will reach their full size by 9 months, although some may take longer to reach their full size, and some breeds may be larger or smaller than the averaged size. They usually don't reach their full adult size until they are about one year old.
Generally, Havaneses do show a preference for swimming, particularly as they are known to be a water-loving breed. They tend to have an adventurous spirit which easily make swimming an enjoyable activity for them. With proper training from an early age, they often grow to take great pleasure and comfort in the water, making regular swimming trips an excellent outlet for exercise and play. In addition, as Havaneses tend to love to explore, introducing them to swimming allows them to look and sniff around different aquatic environments.
Havaneses make excellent pets for first-time owners due to their friendly, gentle nature, loyalty, and small size. As an intelligent breed, they are fairly easy to train and maintain. They are also very devoted to their owners and will bond well with their family. Additionally, their small size means that they don't require a lot of room and exercise, making it easy for most first-time owners to meet their needs.
Training a Havanese is no small feat, but it's also far from impossible. With patience and dedication, tailored training methods, and rewards-based reinforcement, it can be achievable for Havanese owners, both novice and experienced. Initial training should focus on teaching the pup the basics of house rules and manners, as well as obedience commands such as "sit" and "stay." In order to properly train a Havanese, you should use positive reinforcement with treats and lots of verbal praise to reward them for good behavior.
