Questions & Answers
A Labrador Retriever is an intelligent, friendly and energetic breed of dog that is found in three distinct colors: black, yellow and chocolate. They are frequently used as working dogs, providing assistance to hunters and fisherman, doing search and rescue operations, and being guide dogs for the visually impaired. Labradors can live up to 12 years and do well with children. They are an excellent choice for a pet, as Labradors are devoted, loyal and have an outgoing personality. They also generally get along with other household pets and require little grooming.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered hypoallergenic as their fur and dander can trigger allergic reactions in some people. However, since they do not have an undercoat, and their shedding cycle is short, they are considered to be among the breeds less likely to cause allergies. Some people recommend that potential owners of Labradors be exposed to the breed in person before making a decision, to make sure their allergies can handle the breed before bringing home their new pet. Additionally, bathing dogs on a weekly basis may help to reduce allergic reaction risks.
Labrador Retrievers need a high-quality, balanced diet to stay healthy and active. Ideally, choose a premium diet specifically formulated for this breed, including meat as the main ingredient. Feed your Labrador between two to three meals per day, depending on their age. Puppies 4 to 12 months need 4 meals per day. Make sure each meal provides the recommended daily allowance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. While treats are OK, they should never make up more than 10 percent of a dog's daily caloric intake.
Before getting a Labrador Retriever, you should make sure to have all of the necessary essentials. Items like food and water bowls, a bed or bedding, crates and containment options, and toys and treats should all be purchased to make sure your pup has everything needed. Additionally, you should make sure to get a collar, leash, nail clippers, grooming supplies, and up-to-date vaccinations before bringing your puppy home. A Labrador Retriever, especially a young pup, is a playful dog and needs high-quality toys and treats to help keep their energy in check.
Labrador Retrievers are considered large dogs due to their size compared to other domestic breeds. On average, adult Labradors can weigh up to 85 pounds and can reach heights of 25 to 27 inches. That size puts them smack in the middle of what is classified as a "large" breed dog. They are considered part of the Sporting Dog Group by the American Kennel Club. As large and strong as Labradors are, they also have a well-earned reputation for being gentle and easy-going companions that make wonderful family pets.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers love to swim! Not only do they have webbed feet and a water-resistant coat which make it easy for them to swim, but they also generally have a great deal of enthusiasm for it as well. Swimming is a great activity to help keep your Lab physically active because it gives their muscles a full body workout. It can also serve as a calming activity, as it’s often a peaceful and relaxing activity for them. When introducing your Labrador Retriever to swimming, it's important to take it slow and let them get used to the water.
Labrador Retrievers are known for their affable and loving nature, and as such are renowned for being incredibly good with children. Breeders often prioritize finding well-rounded temperaments, making them an ideal choice for families with kids. Labs are known for their sweet disposition, loyalty, and intelligence which makes them easy to train and wonderful playmates. Their inherent talent for retrieving makes them excellent partners for games of catch. Labs also have energy to spare with their boundless enthusiasm, and are more than capable of entertaining children for hours.
Labrador Retrievers are widely considered to be some of the brightest and most intelligent dog breeds. They are highly trainable, having the ability to learn commands and obey instructions at an impressively high rate. They are quite independent, able to problem-solve on their own and figure out how to complete tasks. Labradors also have incredibly good memories, rarely forgetting useful information they have been trained to remember. All in all, they have the capacity to understand and respond to humans better than most other breeds, making them very smart indeed.
