Questions & Answers
Poodles are a unique, elegant, and intelligent breed of dog in the Non-Sporting Group of the American Kennel Club. The larger variety are Standard Poodles, and the smaller size is labeled Miniature or Toy Poodles. They come in a variety of colors, such as black, white, silver, gray, apricot, red, and brown. Poodles are known for their enthusiasm, intelligence, and trainability, which is why they are seen in various activities such as agility, obedience, tracking, and showmanship.
Poodles are a breed that is known to be hypoallergenic and non-shedding. Though the breed may not produce a noticeable amount of hair, they do require frequent grooming and trimming. This is necessary in order to prevent knots or tangles from forming in the coat. On average, poodles will need to be brushed and groomed every 8-12 weeks in order to maintain their non-shedding properties. In addition, poodles will need to have their coats trimmed and groomed every 4-6 weeks.
Poodles have a talented digestive system that can endure a wide variety of foods. They should mainly consume a balanced and nutritious diet of high-quality dry kibble or wet canned food made with quality ingredients. Supplemental proteins such as boiled or baked chicken, turkey, beef, or fish can also be included in their diet. It is important to not give too much human food, such as fruits and vegetables, to Poodles as these foods do not provide the right nutrients for canines.
To become the best puppy parent for your Poodle, you can start by creating a tailored diet that fits their needs. Make sure to adjust the amount of food depending on their age and activity level. Consistent exercise and playtime is essential for proper bone and muscle development. It can also help create obedience and lessen any destructive behavior. Keeping your Poodle's vaccinations up-to-date will ensure robust health and good hygiene habits will prevent parasites and other health risks.
Poodles come in three different sizes. The Standard Poodle is the largest, typically ranging from 15 to 22 inches in height, and usually weighing between 40 and 70 pounds. The Miniature Poodle is the next size down, typically ranging from 11 to 15 inches in height, and generally weighing between 10 and 20 pounds. The Toy Poodle is the smallest size, usually ranging from 8 to 10 inches in height, and generally having a weight of 6 to 9 pounds.
Absolutely, you can take your Poodle running! It may take some short-term conditioning and adjustments, however, since some Dogs may require more time to develop stamina and increase their energy to keep up with more active lifestyles. Make sure to start slow and bring plenty of treats for positive reinforcement. Your Poodle should be in good health before starting a more rigorous exercise plan, so it's important to consult with your pet's vet prior to engaging. You'll also want to avoid intense surfaces like asphalt, as it may be hard on their paw pads.
Poodles are often known for being friendly and great around kids. They usually make excellent family pets as they have sweet and loyal temperaments, and are usually quite gentle and patient. Poodles are highly intelligent and often quickly respond to commands. With the proper training, these dogs can learn how to behave around young kids, and with consistent care and attention, poodles can make wonderful playmates for children. Poodles also need plenty of exercise and would benefit from regular walks and trips to the park, making them a great addition to active, outdoor families.
Generally, the amount of exercise a Poodle needs per day depends on its age and energy level. It's recommended that Poodles receive at least 20 minutes of activity per day but, ideally, they should be getting more than that. For a full-grown, adult Poodle, it's best to aim for a minimum of 45 minutes per day of physical activity, divided into two or three sessions. This can include aerobic activity such as jogging, swimming, or agility course trials, as well as regular leisurely walks.
