Poodles are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, known for their intelligence, versatility, and low-shedding coats. They come in sizes ranging from Toy Poodles, up to Standard Poodles, which can be up to 15 inches at the shoulder. These dignified dogs are often elegant and confident, and have even been used as seeing-eye or guide dogs. Poodles require habitual grooming, such as regular nail trims, ear cleaning, and brushing of their curly fur.
Though Poodles have a reputation for being non-shedding, few breeds are truly non-shedding. All dogs shed at least some hair, and Poodles are no exception. However, Poodles generally have low-shedding coats and only release hair slowly and continuously without the seasonal shedding common to many other breeds. Additionally, the curly coat of the Poodle traps dead hair, making the amount of shedding a Poodle does appear to be far less when compared to other popular breeds.
Poodles have special dietary needs and should not be given human food. Certain human foods are toxic to them and can cause health problems or even death. As a general rule of thumb, Poodles need a minimum of 30 minutes of daily exercise, divided into several walks.
