Ah, so you want to know more about the wonder-dogs sweeping the nation. Where to begin…
Neighbor can’t stop raving about their new Labradoodle? Best friend over the moon about their Cavapoo pup? Parents constantly posting pictures of their adorable Goldendoodle? Why exactly is everyone going nuts over these dog breeds with the funny names?
Doodles are awesome, that’s why. But to understand just how awesome these dogs really are, first we have to understand what they are.
Depending on who you ask, the first Doodle breed varies. However, one of the major things that ALL Doodles have in common is that they’re bred from crossing a Poodle with another breed of dog.
Now, these dogs are not “mutts” or even your average mixed-breed dog. Doodles are purposefully bred to exhibit certain qualities and physical features like many purebred dogs out there.
The difference between Doodles and, say, a German Shepherd or a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Dachshund, for example, is that Doodles are designed to be the perfect companion dog.
Poodles have a lot going for them. They’re smart, goofy, and they have amazing, non-shedding coats that other breeds just can’t hold a candle to. Doodle breeds aim to combine these desirable traits with the best traits of other breeds—such as a Golden Retriever’s friendliness and loyalty—to create the ultimate best friend.
For example, the first Labradoodle was bred in an attempt to create the ultimate hypoallergenic guide dog for a vision-impaired woman whose husband was allergic to dogs.
As it turns out, smart, loyal, allergy-friendly dogs are something that just about every family would like to experience. Today, just about every breed you can think of has been (or is being) Doodleized, and families just can’t get enough.
Again, there are many, many breeds of Doodles out there, and all vary from one another.
However, there are a few traits which breeders aim to pass on to their Doodle pups, regardless of the parent breeds:
Size varies from breed to breed, and depends a lot on the non-Poodle parent. For example, Labradoodles come in sizes ranging from ultra-tiny to standard-sized, while Cavapoos are typically on the smaller end of the spectrum because their parent, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is so small to begin with.
Coat colors and patterns can also vary depending on the parents, with some Doodle breeds resembling Poodle patterns and coloration while others have much more varied options.
Unfortunately, no.
With any trend in the dog breeding business, puppy mills are bound to exploit families to make a quick buck.
Dishonest breeders take advantage of the Doodle “brand” and reputation to peddle sickly, anti-social puppies for a premium—puppies that later cost owners an average of $5,000 in extra vet bills. That is, if your puppy even survives.
When you choose a puppy, you deserve to know that your dog is coming from a breeder who loves these animals as much as you do. You deserve to know that your puppy was bred and raised to the same standards as the original Doodles decades ago, and not the fly-by-night puppy mills of today.
