Questions & Answers
Pomskies are extremely interesting due to the way they are a convergence of many different breeds. Their friendly temperament, unique looks, and intelligence make them stand out. Pomskies are a hybrid breed created by intentionally crossing the smart and affectionate Pomeranian with the strong and energetic Siberian Husky. As a result of this hybrid status, Pomskies tend to have traits from both parent breeds, and no two Pomskies will look or behave the same.
The Pomsky coat is unique and beautiful, with a range of colors including black, gray, and white. It is medium length with a very thick and soft plush texture, which can make them appear larger than they actually are. The breed has a stunning double coat, which features a wooly undercoat and a straight top coat that has shaggy ends. The Pomsky coat sheds minimally throughout the year and needs only regular brushing once a week to maintain a nice and healthy look. Their coats are water-resistant and help keep them warm during colder weather.
Pomskies are small, active dogs and should be fed a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet specific to their age, size, and activity level. Foods that are not suitable for Pomskies include foods high in fat, treats that contain a lot of sugar, and table scraps. Due to their small size, their diet should also be carefully portioned to make sure they don't overeat. It is also important to avoid feeding them food that is chemically treated as this could have a negative effect on their health.
Prior to bringing your Pomsky home, it's important to ensure your home is prepared. Start by puppy-proofing by ensuring all wires and cables are out of reach as Pomskies are very curious animals and are likely to try and chew on them. Make sure any objects or furniture that can move or tip over are securely attached to the floor or wall. Additionally, have a designated area for your Pomsky to sleep such as a crate with a comfortable blanket or bed for them to snuggle up in.
Pomskies are considered to be a small-to-medium-sized dog breed. They typically reach heights of 12-15 inches and typically weigh between 10-30 pounds, depending on the size of each individual dog. While considered small, Pomskies are still larger than most toy breeds. They are a hybrid breed, the result of crossing a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky. As such, they tend to have a mixture of traits from both parent breeds, combining the brachycephalic head of the Pom with the strong, sturdy legs of the Husky.
Pomskies are known for being incredibly active dogs. They are typically enthusiastic when it comes to playing and need consistent exercise to ensure they maintain a healthy body and mind. Not only do they enjoy fetching, but they have an innate ability to figure out complex activities and requests. These breeds thrive when kept active, both physically and mentally, and since they possess a lot of energy, they are always up for a good challenge. They have an adventurous spirit and routinely excel in activities that require intense canine athleticism, making them great for agility and tracking courses.
Generally, Pomskies do well with other animals, such as cats, and get along with other pets. With a proper introduction and plenty of positive reinforcement, Pomskies can form lasting relationships with their new animal family, whether they are from the same litter or an entirely different species. It is important to monitor their interactions and make sure all pets are getting along, playing safely, and creating a positive environment for one another. Socialization is key to creating a harmonious living space and can be achieved through consistent, positive reinforcement.
Training a Pomsky is essential for developing a strong bond and ensuring a positive relationship with your pup. To begin, it's best to start with basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and down. Start by choosing a location that is distraction-free, preferably indoors, and provide plenty of treats as rewards for successful obedience. Be consistent with your commands, and be generous with those treats and verbal praise when your pup gets it right.
