Questions & Answers
Pomskies are an incredibly interesting hybrid creature, because their genetic makeup is so unique. They combine the Alaskan Malamute, a breed of spitz-type dog, and the pomeranian, a small toy breed of dog. This means that Pomskies have a special combination of both parent breeds’ looks and behavior that makes them incredibly unique. Their personalities range from high energy to mellow and they can be quite friendly or loyal to their owners.
Pomskies can be non-shedding, though it highly depends on the individual dog and its parent breeds, Pomeranian and Husky. Generally, Pomskies are low to moderate shedders, but every breed is different and some of their coats may be thicker than others. If you're looking for a hypoallergenic dog, there are a few non-shedding Pomskies, but unfortunately, you cannot always guarantee a completely non-shedding coat.
Pomskies, being the product of a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, need a special diet that meets their nutritional needs. Depending on the size of your Pomsky, and the activity level they have, their meal and feeding requirements may vary. The best diet for your Pomskies is usually high quality food created specifically for small breeds of dogs. While protein should be the main macronutrient for your Pomsky, it is important to offer nutrients from a variety of sources to ensure they get enough magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals.
Pomskies have a few special requirements in order to stay healthy and happy. For starters, they require daily exercise to keep their limbs and joints healthy. Additionally, they need to be groomed regularly in order to keep their coat and skin healthy. A proper balanced diet, including high-energy premium foods, is pivotal for their growth and development. Since they adapt easily to their surroundings, it is recommended to use positive reinforcement and reward-based training to help them become well mannered and social in different environments.
Pomskies come in a wide variety of sizes, depending on the type of pomeranian and siberian husky bred together. Generally, you can expect a Pomsky to be roughly 3-10 pounds and 8-15 inches in height, although they do come in slightly smaller or larger sizes as well. Full-blooded Pomskies tend to be on the smaller side, around 9-15 pounds and 10-15 inches, while mixed Pomskies may be slightly larger, around 15-22 pounds and 14-18 inches.
Pomskies are energetic and active dogs, so they need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Generally, they need at least an hour of exercise every day. This should include a combination of running, walking, and playtime. If you have a larger outdoor space, it is better for your pup, as they can be more active and physical. Though, keep in mind that regardless of whether you have a larger outdoor area or a smaller one, it still matters what kind of activities your pup engages in.
Pomskies can get along with other pets if they are introduced correctly. Socialization is an important part of owning a Pomsky. They can be highly intelligent, so it is important to make sure they are familiar with new people and animals in their environment. If the environment is stable and rules are set for the pet, then it is likely that the Pomsky will learn to become friends with the other pets in the home. It is also important to establish boundaries and consistency between each pet, so that all know their place in the family, and that the Pomskies are respected.
It depends on your individual pup and what you are hoping to accomplish with the training. Generally, Pomskies can benefit from 10-20 minute daily training sessions, but for more complex commands longer training sessions may be necessary. As a rule, if you can provide consistent, frequent training for your Pomsky, it's likely to give you the best results. That said, the amount of time spent in each daily training session is ultimately up to you and should depend on what you and your pup are both comfortable with and able to achieve.
