Questions & Answers
French Bulldogs are a small breed of domestic dog, typically classified as a member of the non-sporting group. Since they are small, they are sometimes classified as a toy dog. They are known for their stocky, muscular build, their short snout, wide-set eyes and their large, erect ears. French Bulldogs come in various colors and patterns, from brindle to fawn. Frenchies need very little exercise, but do require daily walks for mental stimulation, as well as frequent socialization.
Contrary to popular belief, French Bulldogs are not actually considered hypoallergenic. Because of the breed's short coats, people may think they are, but they still shed and will likely trigger allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to dogs. French Bulldogs have a double-layered coat made of a soft, underfur and a dryer, coarser topcoat, creating the need for occasional brushing. In order to properly groom a French Bulldog, it may require weekly baths or professional grooming.
French Bulldogs are carnivorous animals so typically they should be fed a combination of a high-quality dry dog food and a fresh, meat-based diet. Their ideal diet should include foods like lean meats such as chicken, beef, and fish; whole wheat grains and pasta; eggs; vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and sweet potatoes; and fruit such as apples and bananas. In addition, some people may want to supplement their food with omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and glucosamine to help maintain healthy skin and coat, improve digestion, and aid in joint health.
When you're preparing your home for your new French Bulldog, it's important to think about the pet's safety, security, and comfort. Start by clearing out any hazards, like loose wires or toxic plants. Set up a contained area with a comfortable bed, toys, and plenty of water. Getting a dog-proof gate or crate can help you prevent your pet from wandering and potentially getting into trouble. You'll also want to block off stairways or other areas of the house for added safety.
French Bulldogs are definitely considered to be one of the smaller breeds of dogs. Unlike some of the more common large breeds, French Bulldogs typically only weigh about 16-28 pounds when fully grown, with females usually being smaller than males. They typically don't grow taller than 12-15 inches, and are a generally short, stocky breed.
French Bulldogs may not enjoy swimming as much as other breeds of dogs, but they certainly don’t hate it. Many French Bulldog owners say that their pet loves to show off their swimming skills in a pool or lake, but it’s important to keep in mind that the breed is prone to joint problems and breathing difficulties. To be safe, their owners should always supervise them while they’re in the water. If French Bulldogs are adequately trained and monitored as they build up their swimming skills in shallow water, they can certainly learn to enjoy an occasional swim.
French Bulldogs make excellent family dogs. Not only are they smart, loyal and affectionate, but they come with the added bonus of being relatively small, making them a great fit for a home with limited space. Their small size doesn't mean they are fragile though; they are surprisingly tough and have few health problems! As active, playful dogs, French Bulldogs typically get along well with children and will show them lots of love and devotion.
French Bulldogs are indeed well-known for their intelligence. They are highly trainable and can quickly learn commands, sometimes even faster than more commonly-known breeds such as German shepherds or Labrador retrievers. They have excellent problem-solving skills and can remember learned tasks for long periods of time. Plus, their independent nature allows them to quickly interact with their environment and form relationships with other people and pets. French Bulldogs are quite intuitive and can sense when something isn't quite right, and they will often take it upon themselves to alert you of potential dangers.
