A Labradoodle is a hybrid breed of dog that is created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. Labradoodles retain the intelligence of the breeds used to create them, as well as their friendly, obedient nature. They are highly intelligent, very friendly, affectionate, and loyal making them great therapy dogs. Labradoodles also do not shed as much as many purebred dogs, giving those with allergies the opportunity to own a dog.
Labradoodles are often thought to be hypoallergenic, but the truth is it varies from dog to dog. Some may be hypoallergenic because they don't shed, so the potential for hair-borne allergens is reduced. However, Labradoodles that shed can create the same allergen levels as any other breed with the same amount of shedding. Some Labradoodles can be bred with non-dander-producing breeds, which may reduce the allergenic effect.
Labradoodles do have some specific dietary needs that are important to consider when caring for one of these pups. It's important to make sure your Labradoodle gets a quality, nutritionally balanced diet that's ageand size-appropriate. Their diet should also include lean proteins, healthy fats, unprocessed carbohydrates, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. It's also important to get a diet with taurine, an essential amino acid for heart health, and omega fatty acids for a healthy coat and skin.
While Labradoodles do not require too much grooming and have a relatively low exercise need, they do need special attention when it comes to their health. First of all, they are prone to certain health conditions, such as hip and elbow dysplasia and eye abnormalities. Therefore, they need to be regularly checked by the vet to ensure they stay healthy and have regular heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.
