Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a crossbreed between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, and often have a friendly, intelligent and loving temperament. This makes them great family pets that are also easy to train and can be used for activities such as therapy, search and rescue and even service work. Labradoodles need daily exercise, socialisation and mental stimulation to stay healthy. They do not do well in hot weather, so keep them indoors during warm days and provide plenty of shade and water. They have a coat that can jam or tangle easily, so regular grooming is advised.
Labradoodles have long been touted as low-allergen breed, although there is no guarantee that any breed is 100% hypoallergenic. It is true that Labradoodles do shed less than many other breeds, thanks to their combination of poodle and Labrador Retriever parentage, and they have actually been bred in some cases to reduce allergens. That said, the truth is that Labradoodles are still capable of irritating allergies, due to their fur, dander, saliva and skin secretions.
Labradoodles should never be fed large amounts of human foods, such as chocolate, candy, and ice cream, as these can cause digestive issues or toxic poisoning. Also, hard, raw foods such as bones can be hazardous, causing blockages and mouth injuries. Additionally, Labradoodles should not be fed cooked onions, garlic, and chives, as these can cause a potentially serious blood disorder. Other foods to avoid include any food that has excess sugar, fat, and salt, which can lead to obesity and nutritional deficiencies.
To prepare your home for your new Labradoodle, you should ensure you have the necessary supplies and equipment. Start by getting a good quality dog bed, preferably one that offers orthopedic support. It should be large enough for your Labradoodle to stretch out comfortably and have enough cushioning to support them as they grow. You'll also need a selection of chew toys to keep your pup engaged and entertained. You'll also need appropriate food and water bowl sets. Make sure any outdoor area is secure and has a safe place where your pup can relieve itself.
Labradoodles vary in size considerably depending on the lineage of their parents. Some will be smaller, measuring around 15-20 inches tall at the withers and weighing between 10 and 25 pounds. Whereas larger Labradoodles can reach 23-25 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. On average, most Labradoodles grow to be around 21 inches tall and anywhere from 25 to 50 pounds in weight. No matter the size, Labradoodles have sturdy, strong builds and require a large amount of exercise to stay healthy.
Labradoodles are highly active and energetic dogs. They are excellent family pets as they thrive off of activity. A Labradoodle requires daily exercise and, if provided, they are sure to bring an abundance of joy and fun into your life. Because of their active lifestyle, they do need regular outings, walks, and activities to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. They will also require daily brushing and grooming to ensure their coat stays healthy and to minimize shedding. In return, you will get a loyal, affectionate fur-pal who will be full of love and energy.
Labradoodles can make wonderful companions and are great for first-time owners, as long as they have the dedication and time to devote to training and caring for the pup. As with any breed, Labradoodles will require an investment of your patience to ensure they get the attention and exercise they need. With proper training, Labradoodles can be a loving addition to any family, making them suitable for first-time owners. They have a generally gentle and loyal temperament and are often affectionate and very much trainable.
Training a Labradoodle is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistency. It's important to begin with basic commands, such as "sit", "lie down", and "stay". When you give a command, make sure to provide a small treat to reward the desired behavior. Begin by setting up short training periods at regular intervals throughout the day. Work on reinforcing the commands with the treats and verbal praise. Work up to longer and more challenging commands, such as 'fetch' or 'roll over'.
