Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a designer breed of cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. This hybrid breed combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the playful nature of the Labrador Retriever. Though variety exists, Labradoodles are usually known for their medium-to-large size and a curly, non-shedding coat. They usually come in a variety of colors such as solid black, shades of brown, white and even apricot. Like all hybrid breeds, Labradoodles can be either crossbred or bred successfully from the same litter.
Labradoodles are not a guaranteed hypoallergenic breed. Labradoodles are bred from Poodles, and their non-allergenic coat, and Labrador Retrievers, which are not known to shed a lot, so the amount of shedding and dander produced can vary widely from pup to pup. It is recommended to meet your pup prior to adoption if you are worried about allergies, as it is impossible to guarantee a hypoallergenic Labradoodle.
Labradoodles have special dietary needs just like any other hybrid or purebred dog. They typically require a diet that is high in protein and low in fat. In particular, their digestible proteins should come from sources like high quality meats, fish, eggs, and dairy products, as well as certain vegetable proteins, such as legumes. Additionally, they should have plenty of complex carbohydrates and fiber to help regulate digestion, as well as essential fatty acids and minerals to help with growth and development.
Before getting a Labradoodle, it is essential to purchase collar and leash, food and water bowls, grooming brushes, toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, toys, a crate, and potentially doggy stairs or ramp if the family lives in a house with stairs. Additionally, a bed or firm pillow is a nice extra. It is recommended to also look into specific products made for Labradoodles, such as conditioner for their wavy fur, or extra durable toys if they are a puppy as they tend to be quite the chewers.
Labradoodles are generally considered to be small dogs, depending on their type. The original Labradoodles, bred to be guide dogs, are classified as Standard Labradoodles and weigh between 45 and 65 pounds. Miniature and Toy Labradoodles are also available, which weigh between 15 and 24 pounds. Some Labradoodles may even fall into the 'teacup' classification, and are very small in size. All Labradoodles are very trainable and intelligent, making them ideal family pets regardless of their size.
Labradoodles are exceptionally active dogs that require plenty of physical and mental stimulation! They are renowned for their boundless energy which they often express through excited jumping and running. Generally, Labradoodles are quite obedient as they love to please their owners and they respond well to positive reinforcement training. In addition to daily walks, Labradoodles thrive when given plenty of opportunities to play. This breed is an ideal fit for families with active lifestyles and outdoor living spaces where they can explore and practice their agility skills.
Labradoodles are great around children, with their loving and loyal nature, friendly disposition, and intelligence. They make wonderful companions for children, offering unconditional love and loyalty. Labradoodles are intelligent and highly trainable, making them easy to teach obedience and some tricks. They are also patient and gentle around children, making them good guardians of the little ones. As far as mess-making, Labradoodles generally don't make too much of a mess, so they are a great match for kids who create a lot of messes.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training Labradoodles each day will depend largely on the age and amount of experience of the individual dog. Generally speaking, most puppies would benefit from 10-15 minutes of training each day, while more experienced Labradoodles may take as little as 5 minutes per day of focused training. If you are trying to teach your Labradoodle new commands or tricks, you may need to up the time spent training to 20-30 minutes each day.
