Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are designer dogs, so they do not have an established breed classification. They are a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, and may differ in size depending on which type of Poodle was used during breeding. Ultimately, many kennel clubs do not recognize them as a purebred, but some may classify them as a “hybrid” or “mixed breed.” Despite not having an official breed classification, these dogs are highly regarded as a companion animal for a variety of reasons.
Labradoodles have a very unique and distinct coat. Generally, their hair is soft and wavy, hence often needing regular brushing and grooming. The coat can vary left to right side, with one side being course and the other being softer. This is due to the cross breeding between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. As hybrid dogs, most Labradoodles do not shed, making them a great choice for home with people who suffer from allergies.
Labradoodles are particularly quirky eaters in comparison to other dogs due to their unique digestive systems. The amount of food given to a Labradoodle is dependent on its age; puppies, for instance, should receive 4 meals a day, while adults should be given 2 meals. Generally, Labradoodles prefer diets consisting of natural, grain-free, limited-ingredient kibble. Mixing wet, gluten-free food with kibble is a healthy choice since this diet provides the nourishment and necessary vitamins and minerals Labradoodles require.
If you're getting a Labradoodle, there are a few essential items you'll need to pick up beforehand. First, it's important to get the right size crate for your pup, as it gives them a safe, quiet space to relax when they need it. You'll also want to stock up on comfortable bedding for the crate and the house, plus a food and water bowl for each. Next, you'll need to get a good collar, sturdy leash, and harness, plus a variety of durable chew toys.
Labradoodles are considered to be medium to large-sized dogs, depending on the specific breed of Labradoodle. The average Labradoodle stands between 24” to 28” at the shoulder and weighs between 25 to 45 lbs. However, miniature and toy Labradoodles weigh much less than a standard Labradoodle. Similar to other hybrid breeds, variation in size and overall look is common with Labradoodles. Some Labradoodles look much more “doodle-like” while others retain many of the characteristics of their specific lab parent.
Walking your Labradoodle is an important part of proper health and wellness, and it all depends on the age and activity level of your pup. Generally speaking, most Labradoodles should walk for at least 30 minutes per day, but the more active breeds may require closer to 60 minutes to stay healthy. You may also want to add in extra activities or playtime if your pup is particularly high-energy. It's important to monitor your pet's energy levels and adjust your walk times as needed, to ensure they remain healthy and happy.
Labradoodles are renowned for their intelligence, friendly personality, and affectionate nature, which makes them great companions for children. Labradoodles are loyal and eager to please, making them easily trainable and especially friendly. They also have a gentle nature and can respond well to verbal and even light physical commands. Studies suggest that children with Labradoodles often develop a strong bond with their pet, building their emotional intelligence and understanding of how to act around animals.
Training a Labradoodle can be both easy and difficult, depending on the individual Labradoodle's temperament and level of intelligence. With consistent, positive reinforcement, your Labradoodle should be able to learn basic commands such as sit, stay and come. However, if they are bred incorrectly they may not pay as much attention and may be harder to train. It is important to start training as soon as possible, while your Labradoodle is still young, and then continue to reinforce behaviors to keep them sharp.
