Questions & Answers
A Labradoodle is a hybrid breed of dog, created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle. This combination produces a unique, highly intelligent pup which is sometimes referred to as a "designer breed". Labradoodles have the benefits of both parent breeds, often being very trainable and possessing a non-shedding coat, making them an attractive pet choice for many families. They can be very loyal and loving creatures, making good family companions.
The Labradoodle coat can vary in many ways, such as length, texture, thickness, style of curl, and the amount of shedding. Generally, Labradoodle coats are medium length and wavy, but can range anywhere from short and very curly to long and slightly wavy. Most Labradoodles have a single coat, meaning they have fur, but no undercoat, which is the dense layer of fur beneath the outer coat that provides insulation. This makes them less prone to shedding, but they may need more frequent haircuts as a result.
Labradoodles may have special dietary needs depending on their age and activity level. Generally, they tend to do well on high-quality, dry or canned food formulated for their size. However, some Labradoodles may require different nutrition depending on their individual needs and size. A veterinarian can help determine the best diets for Labradoodles based on their age, activity level, and any medical issues they may have. Labradoodles can also benefit from dietary supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine to help support healthy skin, eyes, and joints.
Before getting a Labradoodle, it is important to make sure you have all the necessary items to care for your pup. Some essentials to purchase include a crate, food and water bowls, chew toys, treats, a pet bed, grooming tools, waste bags, and other supplies like a collar, collar tags, and a leash. It is also helpful to have items that will help with your puppy’s training such as a training manual, interactive toys, and additional items for teaching basic obedience and activities like sign language and clicker training.
Labradoodles are classified as medium to large-sized dogs depending on their parent breeds. However, Labradoodles bred with Toy or Miniature Poodles are generally considered small dogs. They usually weigh anywhere between 10-25 pounds and have a lifespan of 12-15 years. Labradoodles are loyal, loving, and affectionate making them particularly great family pets. Additionally, they are usually low shedding and often have a non-shedding coat to better suit people with allergies.
It is recommended that Labradoodles be walked for at least 30 minutes a day. A longer walk of about 45-60 minutes is better suited to this active breed. This is not only important from an exercise standpoint, but it also provides an important opportunity to help socialize your Labradoodle and to strengthen your bond as owner and pet. Keep in mind that the amount of walking should be tailored to your Labradoodle's age, fitness level and physical needs. Younger Labradoodles with higher energy levels may require more daily exercise.
Labradoodles are an excellent choice for families due to their overall temperament and loyal, intelligent nature. Unlike many dogs, Labradoodles have a low to minimal shedding, making it easier to keep your house clean. They are generally eager to please, loyal, and easily trained. Labradoodles boast a cheerful, outgoing, and friendly attitude that makes them great family dogs. Not only are they loving and affectionate companions, but they also can be good playmates for young children.
Training Labradoodles is an important responsibility and it's important to be consistent with training. The amount of time spent training your Labradoodle depends on several factors such as age, experience, and temperament. Generally, you should spend at least 10-15 minutes a day doing basic obedience training, teaching your Labradoodle useful commands such as how to sit, stay, come, and heel. We also recommend additional activities that can help to build the bond between you and your Labradoodle, like playing fetch or taking them for a walk.
