Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a hybrid dog breed, which is the result of crossing the Labrador Retriever with the Poodle. Because each litter of Labradoodles is the result of a cross-breed, there is no one definitive breed standard. Consequently, Labradoodles' classifications vary. The American Kennel Club has not recognized the Labradoodle as a distinct breed, so they are generally considered to be mutts or a mixed breed. The International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR) recognizes certain Labradoodle combinations as distinct breeds.
Labradoodles are a hybrid breed that have the unique qualities of both the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. They have a coat that is typically soft, wavy, dense, and waterproof. Their fur coats vary from dog to dog. They may have a straight or curly coat, often it is an in between wave. Usually Labradoodles coats come in cream, apricot, gold, red, black, or a mix of them. A Labradoodle's coat will rarely shed, making it a great family pet for those who are allergic to dander.
Labradoodles should not be fed human food, such as fried, fatty, and sugary foods, because these can cause an upset stomach, or create obesity. It is also not advised to feed them raw eggs, raw milk, or raw fish, as these items could contain bacteria, or parasites, which can be very dangerous for your Labradoodle. Additionally, rawhide chews, sugar-free gum, and chocolate should all be avoided.
Labradoodles require a regular grooming regiment to keep their coats from getting matted and to maintain their unique look. They are also very active and need regular daily exercise to keep them from getting bored and destructive. Some Labradoodles can require dietary changes and an elevated level of attention due to their higher levels of energy. Depending on the age of the Labradoodle, they may require regular checkups with your veterinarian for vaccinations and other preventative healthcare. Additionally, obedience training is recommended to ensure a well-mannered pet.
Every Labradoodle is unique, so the size of your puppy will depend on the mix of breeds. Generally speaking, the standard size Labradoodle will range in height from 22 to 24 inches and weigh 50 to 65 pounds. The medium size Labradoodle will range in height from 17 to 20 inches and weigh approximately 40 to 50 pounds. Similarly, the miniature size Labradoodle will range in height from 14 to 16 inches and weigh around 25 to 35 pounds. Ultimately, the exact size of your Labradoodle will depend on the size of the parents and the size of each litter.
Labradoodles often love to swim! As intelligent and highly trainable dogs, these pups are typical waterfowlers who love nothing more than to be taken for a dip with their owner. Not only are Labradoodles amazing swimmers but they are also excellent divers and can easily learn new water activities, like retrieving sticks and balls. These canines will do anything for their owners, which includes happily swimming in the pool or lake when the opportunity arises.
Labradoodles are generally quite social, and typically do well with other pets in the household. Intentional socialization beginning at a young age is important to ensure that they get along peacefully with other pets in the home. With proper introduction and training, a Labradoodle can learn environmental cues, which can help them to adjust to different situations involving other animals. In addition, behaviour modification training and interactive play can help Labradoodles learn to interact with other animals in your household in a positive way.
Training your Labradoodle is an essential part of having a healthy and happy bond with your pet. Start by teaching basic commands such as "sit" and "down", as these are the foundations of good behavior. As your pup learns and masters simple commands, you can gradually build up to more complex tasks such as teaching the dog to respond to hand signals and to come when called. Additionally, it is important to provide ample opportunities for socialization and interaction with other dogs and people.
