Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a relatively new breed of designer dogs created by crossing Labradors and Poodles. They are incredibly intelligent and energetic dogs, and have quickly become one of the most popular breeds across the world. Fun facts about Labradoodles include: they don't shed much, which makes them ideal for those with allergies; they are incredibly loyal and patient companions; they make excellent watchdogs due to their incredible alertness; their thick furry coats come in a variety of colors; and lastly, they have been known to be very adept at the sport of agility.
Managing allergies with Labradoodles is possible with some proactive measures. Start by exposing your family to the puppy prior to purchase. Once you do bring your pup home, groom your pup regularly. This may include brushing, vacuuming or wiping your fur baby down with a damp cloth. Also, you should vacuum and dust your home often to keep dander under control. If allergies are still an issue, you may also want to look into air purification systems to help reduce airborne allergens. Additionally, specialized allergen-specific shampoos and wipes can help as well.
Labradoodles should not be fed anything aside from a balanced and healthy diet that is appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Human food and treats should be avoided, especially anything containing chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins. Excessively fatty foods should also be avoided as they can cause digestive problems or obesity. Additionally, Labradoodles should never be fed raw meat, as it can contain bacteria and parasites that can be harmful to their health. As always, consult with your veterinarian to determine the best diet for your Labradoodle.
Becoming a great puppy parent for your Labradoodle requires a commitment to learning about their breed, providing proper nutrition, exercise, and regular veterinary check-ups, and loving and understanding the individual needs and preferences of your pup. It also involves setting limits and establishing a routine that is safe and appropriate for your Labradoodle. You'll want to start early socialization; offering positive reinforcement-based training and getting your pup used to being around people, other animals, and new places.
Labradoodles typically grow to be 21 to 24 inches tall and can weigh anywhere from 30 to 45 pounds. The size of Labradoodles can depend on the size and type of their parents—their mother might be a Labrador Retriever or a Standard Poodle, for example—as well as their own genetics. Generally, Miniature Labradoodles tend to be the smallest, Mini Australian Labradoodles tend to be in the middle, and Standard Labradoodles are the largest. They typically reach their full size by the age of 3.
Absolutely! Taking your Labradoodle running can be an excellent way to provide your pup with valuable exercise. Before taking off, it's important to be sure that your pup is up to the task they should be at least one year old and in good health. Once they're ready, make sure to bring plenty of water on your run as well as any supplies to pick up "surprises" left behind by your pup. To ensure a safe journey, consider purchasing a comfortable running harness to which you can attach a leash.
