A Labradoodle is a unique crossbreed created by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Standard or Miniature Poodle. Labradoodles exhibit the best characteristics of both breeds, known for their playful and outgoing personalities, high intelligence levels, and predictable, low-shedding coats. They tend to learn quickly thanks to their eagerness to please their owners, making them great pets for families and active individuals. Labradoodles come in a variety of coat colors and sizes, from 12 to 24 inches in height, and ranging from 15 to 75 pounds in weight.
The Labradoodle's coat can vary depending on the individual pup, but usually it is a hybrid of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle's coats. Generally, the Labradoodle's coat is moderate to fairly long, but it can also be curly or wavy. While neither shedding nor allergen levels can be guaranteed, many Labradoodles are said to possess a low-shedding, low-dander coat. Some Labradoodles are single coated, while others may possess a double-coat, usually found on all types of doodles.
Labradoodles should not be fed chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, caffeine, fatty foods, or any other human foods that may be toxic to dogs. They should also avoid molds, products containing sugar alcohols, moldy food, foods that may contain tomato or potato skins, raw eggs, certain nuts, and anything that may contain too much sugar, salt, or certain types of artificial sweeteners. Feed your Labradoodle healthy, high-quality dog food that has well-balanced nutrition to keep your pup healthy and active.
Preparing for a new Labradoodle can seem daunting, but following a few simple steps can make the process much easier. First, create a safe area for the pup to explore where they won’t come into contact with wires or other hazards. Puppies are especially inquisitive and often chew on cords and other items, so take the time to ensure the space is puppy-proof. Stock up on supplies for your Labradoodle to ensure they will be comfortable in their new home.
Labradoodles come in a variety of sizes, allowing for something to fit the needs of any family. The size can range from a Toy Labradoodle, which are around 18 to 24 pounds and around 12 to 17 inches tall, all the way up to a Standard Labradoodle, which can range from 45-100 pounds and can reach a height of 24 inches and taller.
The amount of time you should walk your Labradoodle per day is dependent upon their age, size, and activity level. A younger Labradoodle may require up to two walks per day of at least 20 minutes each for a total of around 40 minutes. An adult Labradoodle typically needs up to one hour of walking or activity per day, broken up into two-30 minute sessions. For a larger or very active Labradoodle, you may want to adjust the amount of time and/or intensity of the walks to prevent them from becoming bored or over-exerted.
Labradoodles are intelligent and social dogs, so if they are properly trained and socialized, they can typically get along well with other pets. Early exposure to other animals, patience, and consistent rules help ensure success in getting along with them. Training classes are a good way to ensure that your pet is socialized with other animals in a safe and controlled setting.
