Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and thus they are often referred to as a designer breed. Despite their unique look, they are classified as a hybrid breed rather than given their own breed class. Labradoodles are highly intelligent and loyal, making them a popular choice for families as well as those with allergies. As the breed is a mix between two dogs, their size, coat, and appearance can vary, but they are usually well-mannered and easy-going.
With any breed of dog, there is a possibility of causing allergies. However, it is important to note that Labradoodles are a breed that is often recommended for people with allergies because of the low levels of shedding. In general, Labradoodles are known to have lower levels of dander and less shedding than other breeds, which means that the risk of developing allergies or an allergic reaction can be much lower. It is best to consult with your doctor and do an allergy test if you are concerned about having an allergic reaction from a Labradoodle.
Labradoodles should not be fed human food, as these type of treats can be high in fat and sugar, which can be detrimental to a Labradoodle's health long-term. Additionally, certain human foods can contain toxic agents and can cause food poisoning in Labradoodles. Foods like onions, garlic, chives, grapes, raisins, alcohol, macademia nuts, and chocolate as well as sweets are all severely toxic and should not be fed to Labradoodles.
Labradoodles have some special requirements, as they are hybrid breeds of Labrador and Poodle. Commonly, these dogs require more grooming than other breeds as their coats tend to be longer and thicker than other dogs. They also need to have their coats brushed and trimmed regularly. Time should be dedicated to interacting with Labradoodles, as they are very social dogs and need daily stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Additionally, since they are high energy dogs, they require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. This can range from simply playing in the yard to taking them on longer hikes or runs.
Labradoodles vary in size and there is no single answer as to whether they are considered small dogs. Generally speaking, if the Labradoodle is a F1 hybrid, the result of crossing a purebred Labrador Retriever with a purebred Poodle, then the Labradoodle can range between medium and large in size, weighing anywhere between 40 to 70+ pounds. F1B hybrids – made from crossing a Labradoodle with a Poodle – can be either small, medium, or large.
Labradoodles are intelligent, active dogs who need moderate exercise to stay healthy. Depending on the age and size of your pup, it is advised that your Labradoodle takes part in activities for 30-60 minutes each day. Examples of beneficial exercises include regular on-leash walks, off-leash play in the park, and indoor fetch games. They will also appreciate the occasional outdoor adventure or trip to the beach! Additionally, mind games and cognitive exercises can help to keep your pup physically and mentally active.
Labradoodles are known for their friendly and social personalities, so they tend to get along well with other pets, as long as they are properly trained and socialized at an early age. They form strong bonds with family members and enjoy being part of family activities. They often show a strong level of connection and even protectiveness with their owners. Because of their innate lovable nature, Labradoodles tend to be accepting of other pets, like cats, other dogs, birds, rabbits and other small animals.
Training a Labradoodle can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Start with basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and down. Utilizing positive reinforcement such as treats to reward good behavior is best practice. Once basic commands are established, gradually add more challenging exercises. Make sure to give your Labradoodle plenty of breaks while training. Taking time to break up lessons throughout the day will ensure that your Labradoodle doesn't become overwhelmed or stressed. Additionally, it's important to be consistent with your training and reinforce the commands each day.
