Labradoodles are one of the most unique and interesting dog breeds out there. Their intelligence is remarkable, their personalities are unique, and they are very trainable. Labradoodles are the result of breeding Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, which results in a designer dog breed and therefore the name Labradoodle. Generations down the line, they are generally recognized as a healthy medium-sized breed with a low to non-shedding coat that can range from straight to curly variations.
Labradoodles have very individual fur coats that can range from wool-like to straighter hairs that are more like those of a Labrador retriever. Generally, these dogs are considered to be low-shedding, but that, too, can vary. Some Labradoodles may still need regular brushing and grooming, but those that don't are generally very popular when it comes to allergy sufferers. Allergy-friendly coats are something that breeders strive for in breeding programs that produces these unique dogs.
Labradoodles are generally friendly and curious dogs, but they should not be fed overly-large portions of the wrong items. While their diet should always include quality kibble and appropriate treats ordinarily meant for dogs, a Labradoodle's diet should generally avoid chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and nuts, as these are known to cause harm or trigger an allergic reaction in some Labradoodles. Additionally, sugary candy, cake, soda, and other artificially sweetened snacks should be avoided, as too much sugar can cause obesity and other health conditions.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labradoodle will require commitment and dedication. Start by researching the breed-specific needs of the dog so that you can understand its dietary requirements, exercise needs, or social needs. If you and your pet have established a strong bond, you can schedule activities together and take your pooch on walks or play in the park. Provide plenty of mental stimulation and establish a routine. Make sure your home is dog-friendly and that it is free of dangerous items and/or areas so that the pup remains safe.
Labradoodles vary considerably in size, so there is no single answer to whether they are considered big dogs. Generally, the size of Labradoodles can range from miniature to standard and depend on the mix of the parent breeds. A miniature Labradoodle typically weighs 10-15 pounds and stands 14-16 inches tall; a standard Labradoodle typically weighs 45-70 pounds and stands 22-24 inches tall. Therefore, depending on the size of the dog, Labradoodles can be considered big dogs, but not in all cases.
There is no exact number of minutes per day for how long you should walk your Labradoodle, as the amount of exercise your pup needs can be affected by age, health, and other individual factors. However, as a rule of thumb, the American Kennel Club recommends that all breeds of dogs, including Labradoodles, receive at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
