Questions & Answers
Labradoodles are an increasingly popular mixed breed, created by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, that are known for their affectionate and loyal personalities. They are a medium-sized breed, typically weighing 25-45 pounds and standing at 16-24 inches tall. Though originally bred to be hypoallergenic, this is not always the case, so you may want to purchase an allergy test if you're considered prone to allergies. Labradoodles are an intelligent breed and, since they have high energy, they require mental and physical stimulation.
The Labradoodle coat is unique in that it is a combination of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Usually the coat is an wavy, low-shedding, non-hypoallergenic coat of one or a combination of colors such as gray, black, or white. It can also be curlier or straighter, depending on the specific breed of the Poodle. Grooming requirements may range from low to moderate depending on the length of the hair.
Generally speaking, Labradoodles do not have any special dietary requirements that are different from any other dog breed. However, due to their size, Labradoodles may have a different nutrient requirement than larger breeds. For instance, Labradoodles may need more frequent snacks throughout the day. For optimal health, it's important to provide your Labradoodle with a balance of proteins, fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates. As your Labradoodle gets older their dietary needs can change, so make sure you are working with a veterinarian to make any necessary changes to their feeding plan.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Labradoodle requires developing a positive relationship with them based on trust, understanding and love. Start by getting to know their needs, personality, and behavior, and then use positive reinforcement and rewards to train them and motivate them. Make sure to provide mental stimulation, such as with obedience classes and playtime, while also making sure to practice basic leash walking and follow commands that are learned through obedience training. Additionally, always provide plenty of structured exercise, playtime, and attention.
Labradoodles can vary significantly in size, depending on what type of Labradoodle they are bred as. Most Labradoodles will reach the large size, standing between 21 and 24 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 55 and 75 lbs full grown. However, there are some smaller varieties, such as those bred as Mini or Toy Labradoodles, that usually stand between 13 and 20 inches and only weigh 15-25 lbs full grown. Generally speaking, Labradoodles are considered to be a large dog breed, but size can vary due to breeding practices.
Labradoodles are an active breed that needs an average of two hours of exercise a day to stay healthy and happy. This can include a long walk, a jog, a play session in the backyard, or a combination of things. Labradoodles love to interact and play with their people, so make sure to provide them with toys and quality playtime every day. An indoor space with a lot of activities they can do on their own will provide them with additional exercise that can help to prevent them from becoming bored and destructive.
Labradoodles have an exceptional ability to get along with people and other animals. Their adorable personalities make them an ideal fit for a multi-pet household. Generally, Labradoodles can learn to play nicely with other animals, but that doesn't mean they won't fight over bones, food and beds. Starting socialization early and providing plenty of physical and mental stimulation will help Labradoodles understand that it's okay to be around and get along with other pets.
Labradoodles are considered immensely smart dogs. They possess exceptional intelligence, capable of rapidly learning and retaining new skills. Because they are so easily trained, Labradoodles often excel in a variety of activities such as obedience, agility, and hunting. Their extreme smarts even allow them to learn tricks with relative ease. More than just an intelligent breed, Labradoodles also have an incredibly lovely disposition, making them excellent pets. All-around, Labradoodles are known as one of the smartest dog breeds out there, undoubtedly deserving their reputation as an intelligent, loyal pet.
